I understand that the Illinois CCW law requires that the firearm must be completely concealed and out of plain sight. I believe I found the solution in order to satisfy the letter AND spirit of the law. The solution being the Stoker Car Holster. It is a leather holster that is NOT GUN SHAPED and has a flap that COMPLETELY covers the firearm including grip and stays close via magnetic closure, look it up online to see what I'm saying. In other words its basically a leather non gun shaped pouch that is designed to carry a gun safely, but does not telegraph that it's a gun. In your opinion, should I be OK using this? Obviously, I would use this holster ONLY when I am in the vehicle, otherwise I will lock the firearm in a locked car pistol safe under the seat. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!
Yeti Posted November 25, 2022 at 02:47 PM Posted November 25, 2022 at 02:47 PM I believe a paper bag with a gun in it on the passenger seat is legal (but foolish for many reasons including the fact that it is not secure and can become a heavy projectile). If this solution is easily accessible, I don’t see any legal issue as long as it is just in use while the vehicle is occupied (zero security when vehicle is vacant). That said, there are other options that allow seated car access as well (cross draw, shoulder, ankle) that can allow on-body carry without frequent holster/reholster in some areas the act might be hard to conceal. There is no perfect answer for everyone… it’s all about the best compromise for you.

I wanted to have something I can very easily and discreetly switch from my OWB or IWB holster to an advantageous position for self defense while sitting in the car.

John Q Public Posted November 25, 2022 at 07:59 PM Posted November 25, 2022 at 07:59 PM Just remember to lock it on the safe when you are getting out in a no carry zone. IMO it does not meet the letter for storage when unoccupied. Even if it did, the safe is a much better option.
Bubbacs Posted November 25, 2022 at 10:25 PM Posted November 25, 2022 at 10:25 PM Mine lays either between the console and the driver seat or at times it’s just flat in the passenger seat (barrel facing the passenger door grip down). I have a slightly over sized wash cloth I found some years ago in black. I drape this over the firearm to conceal and have never had any issues. People and such have been up to my car and have never given it a second glance or asked about it. Two things here....when I exit the car it goes into my already on holster or the car gets locked caked if it’s a gun free zone. YMMV
Redlin Posted November 25, 2022 at 11:06 PM Posted November 25, 2022 at 11:06 PM Back in 2016 I got t-boned while driving my truck and most of the contents from the front and back of the truck wound up in the road when the tailgate and pass. door opened.Luckily I had my pistol holstered.I always have it holstered in my vehicles just because of that incident.I even have shoulder holsters or cross draw holsters for longer drives.The Stoker car holsters looks o.k. though I wish it had a snap closure option instead of a magnet.

The law does not require complete concealment. Other than laying the gun on your dashboard, or maybe on a seat, your gun is already at least mostly concealed in a vehicle. " (c) A license shall be valid throughout the State for a period of 5 years from the date of issuance. A license shall permit the licensee to: (1) carry a loaded or unloaded concealed firearm, fully concealed or partially concealed, on or about his or her person; and (2) keep or carry a loaded or unloaded concealed firearm on or about his or her person within a vehicle." 430 ILCS 66/ Firearm Concealed Carry Act.
