Prerequisites to become an instructor?

Good Afternoon all,

I was trying to search on here for a solid answer as to how to become a CCL instructor and there does not seem to be a clear answer given. I know that finger prints have to be done at a livescan approved place which is fine but as far as what courses would actually qualify for the ISP is very confusing honestly. I tried to look at the approved curriculum and none of it makes sense to me.

I have called different training places and some are telling me only an 8 hour course is enough, some say 16 hours, i called Range at 355 today and they told me 36 hours is needed. I am being told everything from i can just take a NRA basic pistol course to become an instructor in illinois and some are telling me packages that are 36 hours and $1,500.

Can anyone provide any insight as to what is actually needed and what i can do to attempt to certify myself im in the chicago area and already have FOID/CCL.

Thanks in advance and sorry if this has been answered and just did poor searching.

From https://isp.illinois.gov/Foid/InstructorInfo:

Requirements Prior to Applying for a Firearm Instructor Certificate

Instructor applicants seeking to become a certified Illinois Concealed Carry Firearms Instructor must:

  • submit fingerprints through an Illinois licensed Livescan vendor
  • be at least 21 years of age
  • a legal resident of the United States
  • possess a high school diploma or GED certificate
  • possess at least one of the following valid firearms instructor certifications:
    • Certification from a law enforcement agency
    • Certification from a firearm instructor course offered by a state or federal governmental agency
    • Certification from a firearm instructor course offered by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board
    • Certification from an entity approved by the Illinois State Police that offers firearm instructor education and training in the use and safety of firearms, such as the National Rifle Association of America (NRA).

Additionally, Instructor applicants residing in Illinois or a similar state must either possess an Illinois concealed carry license or be in the process of applying for the Illinois concealed carry license. Out-of-state residents, those not consider a similar state of Illinois, must have a concealed carry license within the state they reside.

I have a USCCA instructor course April 23 and 24.  The course qualifies you to apply with the State police to teach concealed carry.

Years before we had concealed carry in Illinois, I took the NRA Instructor Course after I took whatever prerequisites there were at the time (Basic Pistol, perhaps). It was a three day course, mostly classroom. Had a blast. When CC passed here, I purchased the ISP approved CLIC curriculum here at IC and have kept my NRA credentials up to date.

It's all pretty easy after you are certified as an instructor by a recognized entity. The USCCA Instructor course reelpro is doing sounds a bit shorter than the NRA course I took... but I got to spend two nights away from home!
