But First,

a Word about Senator Koehler

In our last email alert we spoke of Senator Koehler's sponsorship of the bill, now law, that created the requirement for ammunition purchase background checks and, effective 1/1/2023, will require registration of privately transferred firearms. In that alert we asked you to call his office, expressing your opposition to another anti-gun bill sponsored by Representative Hoffman. Our thanks to those who did.

During those calls, some of our members were told of the many pro-gun Democrats holding office in Illinois. While it is certainly true that there have been many Democrats who support the Second Amendment, we take that statement as a diversion from the real issue. You see, the issue is not Senator Koehler's political affiliation, it is his individual legislative record.

Going back to the beginning of gun legislation in a modern, post Heller/McDonald Illinois, Mr. Koehler did vote in favor of concealed carry. Many legislators did, including some who opposed our right to self defense. But simply voting in favor of that bill was not a defining moment. The courts gave them no choice.

Since then, we see that Senator Koehler co-sponsored SB337 Gun Dealer Licensing – Various, the law responsible for closing roughly half of all Illinois gun dealers, permanently.

That same year, he voted for SB2343 Bump Stock/Trigger Crank, a bill that would have banned these firearm accessories in Illinois with penalties as extreme as a Class X Felony.

He voted for another bump stock ban, complete with an attack on various counties' pro Second Amendment resolutions, in HB1467 Criminal Law – Tech.

He voted to require a FOID card in order to purchase Tannerite, another range toy, via SB2561 Prepackage Explosive Component.

He voted for HB1468 Criminal Law – Tech, a bill to require a 72 hour wait on arbitrarily defined “assault weapons”. There was a 24 hour wait in place for long guns at the time.

He voted to create a definition of “Assault Weapon” out of thin air, then create an age based ban via HB1465 Criminal Law – Tech.

IllinoisCarry opposed each of these bills and those who supported them. It is our opinion that one cannot claim to be “pro-gun” while sponsoring and voting in favor of anti-gun legislation. We believe folks are defined more by their actions than by their words.

In their 2/3/2022, Thursday Bulletin, the ISRA explained the failure of their promised “lifetime FOID” card. Their idea of requiring fingerprints to achieve a lifetime of Constitutionally protected rights was, according to them, not in compliance with Federal Law. To us, it never seemed in compliance with the Constitution. We would rather void the FOID than find ways to keep it.

As a short term solution, one that does not require fingerprints to accomplish, please show your support for HB3761 FOID & Concealed Carry – Lifetime. Yes, it would be better to rid our state of the FOID Act entirely but, if it is here for now, this bill at least gets the “lifetime” part right by requiring nothing other than eligibility to have one.

David Koehler used to be my State Senator. He was a very staunch supporter of the 2nd Amendment. In fact he spoke outside the capitol building at a IGold years ago. For some reason he and Jehan Gordon Booth (My state rep) sold their soul to the devil. fortunately due to redistricting I am now represented by a very good Senator and rep.
