vito Posted December 29, 2021 at 03:11 PM Share Posted December 29, 2021 at 03:11 PM I know that this topic has been raised before, but I am wondering about the status of this ban. I haven't read about any arrests for legally licensed carriers who were arrested or had their guns confiscated due to having a laser on them. Maybe that's because not so many people have lasers on their carry guns, or maybe because it is not an ordinance being enforced. Can anyone educate me on this issue? Euler Posted December 29, 2021 at 06:31 PM Share Posted December 29, 2021 at 06:31 PM I see arrests for lasers in the news from time to time, always people arrested for something else first. My impression is that, if there's no other charge and CPD sees you have a laser, CPD will just seize your laser as contraband.
soundguy Posted December 29, 2021 at 07:04 PM Share Posted December 29, 2021 at 07:04 PM It is/was part of the same ordinance requiring all retailers to keep carpet/box knives and other similar tools under lock and key... I am not certain laser sights are really effective in the real world.

Bitter Clinger Posted December 30, 2021 at 01:53 PM Share Posted December 30, 2021 at 01:53 PM Yes, they do work. I practice with my laser both on and off. When it's on I'm noticeably more accurate and can even put a few bullets through the same hole in the paper. It's also a good training tool, since you can see unwanted motion with the laser on. AlphaKoncepts aka CGS Posted December 30, 2021 at 05:44 PM Share Posted December 30, 2021 at 05:44 PM With very little training there is no reason for lasers at self defense distances. Yes the laser ban is on the books. Like magazines, nobody is searching you to see if you have lasers, however if your firearm is confiscated for ANY reason, it is very likely you wont get the laser attachment back. A skillful lawyer may argue that a firearm with an integral laser is preempted, but now you've lost thousands of dollars to retrieve a firearm worth a few hundred. Again lasers really aren't needed. Take a defensive Pistol class and you'll realize quickly with natural point of aim, you'll shoot faster without the laser than with. Also it's very unlikely you'll see a laser in the day time unless you have a green laser and even then sometimes takes a moment for your eye to find. Packy Posted December 30, 2021 at 08:24 PM Share Posted December 30, 2021 at 08:24 PM My EDC gun has a red laser on it. It's not green because during the day I can see my sights and agree with Alpha, it's not needed. But most shootings are in lowlight situations. That's when my laser shines! Green is too bright at night.
Smallbore Posted December 31, 2021 at 01:17 AM Share Posted December 31, 2021 at 01:17 AM One of my reasons for not using a laser is that in low light it provides a nice target for the bad guy. It can allow the bad guy to find you first. Also I do not trust batteries. (Also a mechanical switch that "Murphy" can play with.) Just a personal choice. No. It's an Urbana municipal ordinance, if anything. I'm not even sure it's that. Presumably the judge and jury took possession of the laser into account for sentencing, which is ridiculous enough that I can't imagine that the sentence would not be appealed.
