And why add 10 years of permission every time you buy a gun? is that law or isp policy? ... It's law. It was passed as part of "FOID Modernization." It was the condition that ISRA wanted in exchange for not opposing the universal background check provisions. and getting a "seat at the table." Based on bills introduced federally and in other states, "modernization" is the gun "safety" (control) codeword for "universal background check."

Just to be clear, they don't add 10 years every time you buy a gun. They extend the expiration to a max of 10 years from the date you pass the NICS when buying through an FFL. It's a small bonus. It would be better to not need to go through it at all. Cheers, Tim

When I was doing bodywork I had none! lol Makes holding a glass with sweat hard to do. Anyway this wasn't your point I know.... The 10 year extension is a bonus for having your prints in file as is the free renewal. Yes, it is policy. If you don't have fingerprints on file, you need to renew your FOID before it expires, or your CCL with be invalidated. Except there doesn’t seem to be any way to renew the FOID now. The renew button was there on the portal until I completed the CCL renewal. It is no longer there. Now all I can see on portal FOID bar is edit name/address. CCL indicated it was successfully submitted and under review.

I had done an address change in 2022 (I think my FOID was also about to expire at that time.) and my FOID renewed with a 2032 expiration but the CCL expiration stayed at 2024. I submitted my CCL renewal Jan 10 and it was approved on Feb 7. FOID expiration is now 2034 and CCL is 2029.

So completing the renewal for CCL satisfies the FOID renewal process and fee. that was my first assumption since the FOID renewal button disappeared from the portal. But being Illinois, I hate to assume anything would work like that. now I need to correct my instructor with the updated info
John Q Public Posted March 3, 2024 at 06:58 PM Posted March 3, 2024 at 06:58 PM I have found that the box for renewal of FOID is automatically checked when doing CCL if it's within the renewal window. Who knows what it will be next time you do it. Things seem to change at random.

You should check online to be sure. Cheers, Tim Technically, it is at the time your BG check goes approved, not when the firearm is purchased.
Smallbore Posted March 4, 2024 at 03:14 PM Posted March 4, 2024 at 03:14 PM Reading the posts above I think there is confusion. As I interpret the Foid Modernization Act there is an issue to understand; finger prints. No finger prints on file: Foid only holders keep their existing expiration date being good for 10 years. For CLL holders if their current foid expires before their current CCL the foid expiration will automatically be extended out to the CCl's expiration date. From then on the CCl will be renewed by that date every five years, foid every ten years. If a current CCL's foid has been renewed prior to this Foid Modernization Act it's ten years expiration will still show it's future expiration date for the late 202? or early 203?s. At this expiration date it should automatically extend out to the future CCL expiration date. At that point the two cards (combo) month and day will line up and stay lined up for the future. CCL still good for five years. Foid good for ten years. All buying a gun does is get the state to update your ISP declaration page info while they are logged on with this one time auto extension so as to line up the two cards (combo) with the same month and day. To update everyone's deck page would be labor intensive. Now for those with finger prints on file due to the Foid Modernization Act or the FCCA. Your Foid is life time. No more charge. Still fee for CCL renewal. Don't worry what your deck page has for a foid expiration date. This is how I read all this.
