Chicago BB Gun Purchase Questions

A coworker who lives in Chicago is thinking about getting a BB gun to deal with a growing rat problem in the alley behind his house. He asked me some questions. Not living in Chicago/Cook I didn't know the answers. Can anyone who knows Chicago/Cook ordinances help with these questions?

 

1. Can a person living in Chicago/Cook own a BB gun and keep it at his house ?

 

2. Does the Cook guns/ammo tax apply to BB guns and BBs?

 

3. Can you buy a BB gun online and have it shipped to Chicago?

 

4. Can you shoot a BB gun in Chicago legally?

I don't know the answer to your questions, but as someone who also has a rat problem in their alley, I have had great luck with an exterminator. The problem with shooting the rats is that the remaining rats will eat the dead rat, leading to a food source and increasing the population.

 

This is why poisoning is so effective. Poison one rat, and kill many with that same poison.

Quite a few places have restrictions on BB guns. I myself have a chipmunk issue that a BB gun would care for. But, I have neighbors that would call on me. Not worth risking a Felony charge.

Whenever a person under the age of 18 is ordered to pay a fine or perform community service for a violation of this subsection (, the parent or guardian having legal custody or control of the person may be ordered to pay the fine instead of, or perform the community service in conjunction with, the person.

I know that shooting them feels so much better but I second using control actions other than shooting them.

 

Trapping and poisoning work far more effectively. Plus there's always the off chance someone sees him shooting a gun and calls the cops. You don't want to be playing games with the Chicago PD when it comes to anything related to weapons. Even a BB gun.

Why am I not surprised BB guns are illegal in Chicago?

 

Poison is not an option as most of the people in his neighborhood walk their dogs in the alley (yes they pick up after their dogs) plus kids play in the alley.

 

Exterminators cost money especially when they have to come out multiple times to deal with the problem.

He's also going to set traps (old school spring loaded neck traps) in his garage. He tried killing one with a shovel but the rat was too fast for him to clobber with the shovel. I would have loved to seen him chase a rat around his garage!

The city is going to poison. They do this annually or more in many / most alleys, and people with dogs need to take care. The poison an exterminator uses is far safer, as it is contained much more than what the city does. I spent a couple of days observing the city's rat patrol when I worked at city hall, and they are aggressive about controlling rats, rooting out nests, and sealing off garbage containers. Dogs should not be walked unsupervised in alleys, because they could get very sick. The city will post signs at both ends of the alley indicating the last application of poison.

Forget about any bb gun or even sling shots. Cats. I got a kitten in my fan shroud a few years back. Had to take the shroud off to get the poor thing out. It didn't survive the couple spins before I shut the engine off. I caught the rest that were trying to move into my yard and called chicago animal control. They came and picked the kittens up and told me they have them fixed, give them their shots, and release them into areas that have rodent problems.

Down side of poison is that it gets only the younger rats, older ones have learned to avoid it.

Rats like a variety of foods with their poison. Look up Red Krill rat bait. Something from the army in the '59s. I don't know what it is.

 

Flooding dens with CO2 might help. You can use dry ice or get a CO2 rig from a homebrew shop.

 

Spring tat traps work for a while. Keeping food and water away from them is always the first step. And clean up the dog poop.

 

Shooting them with a pellet gun (.22) is rewarding. Set up a shooting blind. Put bait where they can get to it and get a pot of coffee or other appropriate beverage and begin your hunt just before dusk and dawn. A daisy Red Ryder will take out the smaller ones with a good head shot. I never shoot when the chickens are out...
