...But 2016 came and went, it got archived, and it doesn't seem like anyone has been talking about this since. Is this normal for these sort of things, or is this bill effectively just dead?

Passed Senate and on its way to House when there was a stabbing/murder with one in Chicago which made the Northern Dems nervous.

 

Last status update is 6/30/16. Doubt it makes it into the last 2 days of session next week. Not sure if that means a complete restart in future legislature sessions.

Yes because everybody knows that if you have a knife blade that shoots out at the push of a button it clearly becomes more deadly than any other bladed object. Especially in a CCL holders hands.

SB711 was an earlier, similar bill addressing both automatic knives and stun guns.

 

It's probably too late in session with not enough interest in pushing these bills, to get either through during the 99th General Assembly. It wouldn't surprise me if they're filed again later in January for the 100th GA.

What are the chances for this thing to go somewhere? Not to change the subject, but I'd love to be able to have more non-lethal alternatives. Why we can carry a gun, but not a taser that fires barbs and stuns is beyond me. I know I would consider this as an option before I had to use lethal force. I know they will let us use contact tasers, but I don't want to have to get that close in a lot of situations; before I would do that I would have to go for the gun... another option would be great.

While I'm glad this is moving forward for the taser inclusion, I can't for the life of me imagine ever buying or carrying an automatic knife when fixed blades are legal and quicker to access. Now, if this bill had allowed collapsible batons...We'd have a very neutral nonlethal option.

Wut? I did not see anything about a Taser inclusion. I have hand mobility issues at times and carry a spring assisted opener as a simple folder causes me too many problems. Would welcome autos legalized as I cant see a fixed blade as a solution for me. Agree with the batons.

Perhaps it depends on your interpretation of bludgeon and some other terms

 

 

720 ILCS 5/24-1) (from Ch. 38, par. 24-1)

Sec. 24-1. Unlawful use of weapons.

(a) A person commits the offense of unlawful use of weapons when he knowingly:

(1) Sells, manufactures, purchases, possesses or

carries any bludgeon, black-jack, slung-shot, sand-club, sand-bag, metal knuckles or other knuckle weapon regardless of its composition, throwing star, or any knife, commonly referred to as a switchblade knife, which has a blade that opens automatically by hand pressure applied to a button, spring or other device in the handle of the knife, or a ballistic knife, which is a device that propels a knifelike blade as a projectile by means of a coil spring, elastic material or compressed gas; or

(2) Carries or possesses with intent to use the same

unlawfully against another, a dagger, dirk, billy, dangerous knife, razor, stiletto, broken bottle or other piece of glass, stun gun or taser or any other dangerous or deadly weapon or instrument of like character; or

(3) Carries on or about his person or in any vehicle,

a tear gas gun projector or bomb or any object containing noxious liquid gas or substance, other than an object containing a non-lethal noxious liquid gas or substance designed solely for personal defense carried by a person 18 years of age or older; or

(4) Carries or possesses in any vehicle or concealed

on or about his person except when on his land or in his own abode, legal dwelling, or fixed place of business, or on the land or in the legal dwelling of another person as an invitee with that person's permission, any pistol, revolver, stun gun or taser or other firearm, except that this subsection (a) (4) does not apply to or affect transportation of weapons that meet one of the following conditions:

 

(13) Carries or possesses on or about his or her

person while in a building occupied by a unit of government, a billy club, other weapon of like character, or other instrument of like character intended for use as a weapon. For the purposes of this Section, "billy club" means a short stick or club commonly carried by police officers which is either telescopic or constructed of a solid piece of wood or other man-made material.

Yep, and yet they have been sold at gun shows for years. Had bills submitted last couple of legislative sessions and it almost passed in 2016 until some female killed another with a switchblade late last year.
