Possible relocation coming. Any decent ranges in the Mt. Vernon/Centralia area? Prefer indoor but outdoor okay too. THANKS

If there is an indoor range in this area it is news to me. There is supposed to be a range East of Centralia , there is one near Boyd , a small settlement NW of Mt. Vernon, but you have to be a member , and there is one down by McLeansboro in the Ten mile creek conservation area.

I'm not sure in the Mt. Vernon area but below is a link to the Heartland Training Teams Web site. They are based in Marion, about 45 miles south of Mt. Vernon. There is a link listing most of the outdoor ranges in the area. There is another outdoor range that should be opening in the near future just outside of West Frankfort.

From the link, I know Pond Creek is still taking memberships. The rest are on a waiting list.

For indoor ranges there is Pro Gun in Marion and Point Blank in Harrisburg.

There is the Ten Mile Creek IL DNR outdoor rifle/pistol range in Mcleansboro, about 30 miles from Mt vernon.

I have never been there, I think it opened after I moved back north. At least I never heard of it until a few years ago.

As far as I know it is the only IL DNR rifle/pistol range in the state.

4 seated table, 1 standing table and 2 open stations for handguns.

Ten Mile Creek Conservation Area

Rt 1, Box 179, McLeansboro, IL 62859

Ten Mile Creek is an Illinois Department of Natural Resources facility. It’s a free facility for Illinois Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun shooters. All that’s required is that you register at the Headquarters Building during normal working hours. The staff will issue information about safety rules, hours of operation, etc.

Contact Information: The Site Manager is Jim Eaton (618-643-2863)

Facility: There are five (5) shooting benches and 100 yard capability.

Note: There are usually 2”x2”x6” posts on site for insertion into PVC pipes placed at different distances from the shooting benches. Sometimes irresponsible users shoot these posts in two and destroy the site for others.

Just to be safe, I suggest you bring your own 2”x2”x6’ posts and cardboard for posting targets. The cardboard can be attached by staples or 2” clamps. Clamps are better since protruding staples make the posts impossible to handle after a few uses.

As always, be considerate of other shooters, pick up your brass and leave no trace you were there.

THANKS All -- at least some options to look at. Was doing searches and kept striking out -- of those mentioned only 1 turned up -- and I was looking in a 75 mile radius....

Am really looking for an indoor.

I don't think you'll find one in this area.

Indoor ranges are uncommon in southern Illinois.

There is an indoor range in Belleville, and Rampart in Pocahontas.

Also Piasa Gun club in Alton but it is a private club.

Most everything else is out door.

The complete opposite is true around Chicago. I don't think there is an outdoor range within 30 miles of the city, if not 40 or more, and certainly no outdoor ranges easily reachable by the Metra or other public transportation.

What I wouldn't give for an open-air, public range that took less than an hour to get to from the north side of the city.
