Although I would never open carry I do want it to be 100% legal for the simple reason that carrying open or concealed should be my choice and not the states.

Please help me to understand why you would say...I would NEVER Open Carry? I do not wish to argue with you, I'm just curious.

 

I feel it gives away the advantage of surprise. if I'm in a place and a bad guy(s) is seconds from making his move I'm the guy that will be held at gunpoint or shot first. I feel it would be much riskier to draw on someone while they are keeping their gun on me. If some nut wants to do a mass killing and sees my sidearm he's most likely going to pick me first. I also don't want the attention of the cops responding to man with a gun calls ( in Illinois it would be non stop ) or the average citizens freaking out and asking stores, eateries, etc. to ask me to leave. just not for me. But if someone else is comfortable with carrying open I support their right to do so.

You locked on one scenario and have discounted any other.

 

Open carry has distinct deterrent effect that concealed carry does dot provide. Does the potential victim have a gun?

Concealed carry, maybe, statistically less than 7%.

Open Carry, absolute yes, 100% probability.

Which is the better deterrent?

 

The best scenario is that a decent percentage of the population engage in both.
