Crime on CTA/Mass Transit ... Reports and Data

I don't think the CTA understands how damning those numbers are.

And as alarming as those numbers are, they're really only a small fraction of the total number of crimes committed on and or near the CTA.

They're also posting a list of arrests:

Two men armed with pepper spray and a handgun have robbed CTA passengers across the city three times this summer, police said in a news release.

In each incident, they robbed passengers on a train or in a CTA station and then got off at the next stop or left the station. In at least one robbery, one man had a handgun. At least one robbery victim was pepper-sprayed.

The robberies occurred at:

• 4 a.m. June 25 on a southbound Red Line train near 69th Street.

• 5 p.m. July 24 in the 1000 block of West Fullerton Avenue, where the Fullerton CTA station is located.

• 2:30 p.m. July 25 in the 3400 block of West Lawrence Avenue, the location of the Kimball Brown Line stop.

One of the men is described as a 30-year-old black man standing 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-10 and weighing 140 to 160 pounds. He wore glasses, a Cleveland Cavaliers cap, a yellow and maroon shirt and pants, and red gym shoes.

The other is described as a 40-year-old black man with short black hair standing 5-foot-9 to 6 feet and weighing between 170 and 200 pounds. He was wearing a black polo shirt, black pants and black shoes.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call police at 312-744-8263

Does anyone have any stats on Chicago Metra lines?

I ride the Rock Island District line every day.

I have seen, over the last 20 years, many times when the Metra Police had to be called to take someone off the train.

I have seen a few fist fights, but never heard of anything where I would need to use my gun.

I have a license to carry, but as they are funded by the state, I think that a charge of possession would be a felony on them as well.

With that in mind, I do not carry on the train, but hope to someday.

I mean, I am not a threat to anyone other than someone who would attack me.

I'll keep an eye out for any stats I can drag up and post them as well.

Gunman robs Walgreens and then escapes on public transportation Belmont cta train station

Detectives are trying to track down the gunman who robbed a local Walgreens of up to $10,000 in cash during this morning’s rush hour.

And, to the surprise of absolutely no one, the offender is believed to have escaped the area by taking a train from the Belmont CTA station.

Shortly after 7 o’clock this morning, a man entered the store at 1001 W. Belmont then confronted a customer and an employee at gunpoint, according to a witness who spoke with CWB Chicago.

The two victims were forced into the store management office where the robbery unfolded.

Police describe the offender as a tall black man between 20- and 30-years-old. He wore a black wig, a tight fitted sweatshirt with front pockets, jeans with distinctive white markings on the front pocket area, and white gym shoes. One witness said the gunman had a black backpack and was carrying a can of Red Bull.

Investigators believe that he arrived at the Belmont CTA station minutes before the robbery and he subsequently fled on a northbound train around 7:15AM.

The Station That Cannot Be Secured

Today’s incident is the latest daring violent crime to unfold near the Belmont station this month. Yet, despite assurances from local alderman Tom Tunney that CTA station security is being “beefed up,” there never seem to be cops at the terminal when things go down.

This morning’s hold-up took place 100 yards from the station during the morning rush hour, yet there were apparently no CTA resources on-hand to take action when 911 calls came in.

As of late Tuesday night, there had been no arrests in three shootings and multiple robberies that have been committed near the Belmont CTA station this month.

There are statistics if a crime happens in Chicago:

https://data.cityofchicago.org/Public-Safety/Crimes-2001-to-present/ijzp-q8t2/data

That's why I vastly prefer taking Metra. Since they have conductors on board they'll readily remove unruly passengers, plus those same passengers can't as easily get on, commit a crime, and get off at the next stop. There have been a few times when my train was delayed because of "police action".

2 shot, 1 killed near Pink Line - Southwest side L http://wgntv.com/2016/10/02/2-shot-one-killed-in-shooting-near-cta-pink-line-station/amp/ Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Oh yeah that was the guy that got shot in the buttocks. A friend from California was leaving yesterday and texted me that story from the airport. I swear there was another story recently where a man in Lakeview was shot in the buttocks as well, but it wasn't near a CTA station.

St. Clair County authorities investigating recent shootings at two MetroLink stations say they’re looking to see if the incidents are related.

Investigator Scott Toth said Tuesday that at least one sheriff’s deputy was at the Swansea MetroLink station parking lot around 8 p.m. Monday when a man was shot in the face while waiting on the platform. Two people were taken into custody in connection to the shooting.

Toth said the man’s condition was unavailable on Tuesday, but that the man was still receiving treatment at a St. Louis hospital.

The investigator said the sheriff’s office does a routine check at each MetroLink station in the area and that a deputy was patrolling around the Swansea station at the time of the shooting on Monday. Toth said the deputy was able to apprehend two people believed to be involved in the shooting.

This marked the second MetroLink station shooting within a week.

Another man was shot during a robbery at the MetroLink station near the Casino Queen in East St. Louis around 8 p.m. Nov. 22, according to the sheriff’s office. Toth said the suspects stole “an undetermined amount of money” and shot the man in the back.

The sheriff’s office said a deputy was not at the station when the robbery occurred, but said one responded shortly afterward.

Toth said the man shot in East St. Louis has been released from the hospital and is cooperating with authorities in their investigation.

“We are investigating and trying to connect the two,” Toth said of the two incidents in East St. Louis and Swansea.

The sheriff’s office said it has been talking to witnesses and has received surveillance video from both shootings.

More details are expected to be released Wednesday if charges are filed from Monday night’s incident.

Patti Beck, a Metro spokesperson, said the transit system was assisting in both investigations.

“Our entire team, which includes the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office, St. Louis police, St. Louis County Police, along with our public safety officers and contracted security guards, we’re all committed to protecting riders that board the Metro system,” Beck said. “We’ll continue to do everything we can to transport our riders safely to their destinations.”
