vezpa Posted November 13, 2013 at 08:24 PM Share Posted November 13, 2013 at 08:24 PM I finally got my best friend into shooting by taking him to the range a few times. He bought his first gun today a Ruger SP101 because he really likes shooting mine. When we shoot he comes down to the south side and we shoot in the south burbs. He lives in Hainesville/Grayslake and wants to know about ranges in the area. I know that *****s at a range or gun-shop can quickly turn someone off so I wanted to ask you guys which range is best in that area. He sent me a link to this place http://hpshootingcenter.net I can recommend it because I haven't been there. Any word on the place or others nearby? Thanks
ilphil Posted November 13, 2013 at 09:24 PM Share Posted November 13, 2013 at 09:24 PM Never been there, but have shot at both the indoor range at Bass Pro in Gurnee and The Outdoorsman in Winthrop Harbor.Bass Pro is cleaner and has much better ventilation. Haven't been there recently because I got tired of their check-in & check-out process. Plus the know-it-all types at the counter.Outdoorsman is not as modern or clean but a much more friendly atmosphere. I prefer to shoot there even though it is farther away from home. handyflyer Posted November 13, 2013 at 09:51 PM Share Posted November 13, 2013 at 09:51 PM I've been there a couple times. It's "older" to put it mildly. 25 yard range. They are reasonable on their prices. $16 for one hour if I remember right. To move the target you have to "crank" the pulley. The range and shop are in the basement. It works. If BassPro is closer, I'd go there instead. Much nicer and same price.
cola490 Posted November 13, 2013 at 09:54 PM Share Posted November 13, 2013 at 09:54 PM I agree about the range at Bass, the attitude of the employees is very poor.
handyflyer Posted November 13, 2013 at 09:56 PM Share Posted November 13, 2013 at 09:56 PM On Target in Crystal Lake is real nice. They have been very friendly to me there. I had a bullet jam up my M&P 15 real good and the RSO tried to help me out. Their prices are a little higher, $20 an hour. But it is brand new and they have a 75 yard rifle range as well. Yeah, it's about at a half hour drive from Grayslake to Crystal Lake, but On Target is an excellent range all around.
RockerXX Posted November 13, 2013 at 10:56 PM Share Posted November 13, 2013 at 10:56 PM I believe when you factor in the drive and gas, Bass Pro is going to be your best option in this area... I don't shoot indoor ranges as I have land to shoot on but as many have said there is no shortage of complaints about Bass Pro's policies but they do have the nicest indoor range in the immediate vicinity... Sharz96 Posted November 14, 2013 at 12:13 AM Share Posted November 14, 2013 at 12:13 AM I'm just north of Hainesville and we go to OnTarget Crystal Lake and Bass Pro Gurnee. I've looked at H&P but I've never heard much good about it and if I'm going to drive that far, I'll go with OnTarget. It's nicer all around, and if you do "Date Night" Friday, you can share a lane for the price of one, making it cheaper than Bass Pro.

BillyP Posted November 14, 2013 at 03:56 AM Share Posted November 14, 2013 at 03:56 AM Have not shot at hpshootingcenter. BassPro is probably the closest to him. Very clean range but the process of getting in and out is a pain. You must come in one specific set of doors, let them put a lock on every gun you bring and then zip tie your bag. Once you get to the range area, everything removed. The reverse process when you leave. They only have 5 or 6 lanes and you must usually set up a reservation to shoot on a weekend day. He is probably equal distance between OnTarget and the Outdoorsman. No complaints about either location.
birdman1967 Posted November 14, 2013 at 05:53 AM Share Posted November 14, 2013 at 05:53 AM I literally live 5 minutes from HP. The owner puts me off of that place.! I been there 4x or so. The last year or so I drove 15-20 minutes to On Target in Crystal Lake and couldn't be happier. Great ventilation and ammo isn't marked up as much as it is at HP. Best thing is I haven't run across a grump with no personality either. No place should make you feel unwelcome or a nuisance. George72 Posted November 14, 2013 at 05:20 PM Share Posted November 14, 2013 at 05:20 PM I live in the Hainesville/Grayslake area. Bass Pro in Gurnee is not bad. I don't mind the check-in / out process. After all this is Illinois and the store is attached to the mall. The Outdoorsman is ok. Bass Pro is my goto for a in-door range. I am a member of the Bristol shooting ranges. Its all out doors with some heated pistol and rifle shooting areas in the winter. The pistol range has 7,25, and 50 yard targets at each lane. The rifle lanes offer 25,50,100,200 yard targets. It also has a trap/skeet shooting range which I really enjoy. Some of the rules are rather strict but I can shoot everything in my gun safe. GlockShooter Posted November 15, 2013 at 01:00 AM Share Posted November 15, 2013 at 01:00 AM Two issues I have with the Bass Pro range, unless things have changed since I was there last: There's a tiny table at the line big enough to hold a gun and box of ammo. That's it. The rest of your gear has to reside on the floor next to you. The range has it's own ventilation system, which just sucks air from outside and circulates it. Whatever the temp is outside, that's what it is in the range. I was there in July, and left after 20 minutes because the sweat rolling into my eyes was preventing me from being able to see the target. That said, the electronic target distance system is nice, it's clean, and the lighting is good. I think they have a policy regarding shooting reloads, but don't ask/don't tell worked for me. ETA: HP is your typical basement range. It's not the worst I've seen, but the only RSOs are the cameras unless someone happens to be sweeping brass. You are likely to have a few safety offenses take place. It also gets busy. I've been there at 6pm on a Thursday and had to wait 45 minutes for a spot.
