Is it a Speed Limit sign or a Go This Speed sign?

Apparently in FL is might very well become a 'Go This Speed' sign or else, not a speed limit sign...

And remember it's all about safety and saving lives

I sorta understand the logic, but FORCING everyone to drive at a certain speed is the wrong approach IMO, that is if safety is the true motive... The law should be punishing those who exhibit the road rage, not forcing everyone else to pacify and cuddle those that can't control themselves...

I have no problem with people driving slower than the speed limit as long as they don't hog the left lane. I remember when most roads were posted with signage indicating something like "slower traffic keep right". I think that has been pretty much forgotten.

When I learned to drive, the unwritten rule was that unless you were passing, keep to the right. The left lanes were for faster moving traffic. It sounds like this is what Florida is doing. I agree with it.

Unfortunately, "slower traffic keep right" was interpreted by many as "go WARP SPEED in the left lane, even if totally unsafe to do so!"

I remember reading a long time ago there was a federal regulation based on the Interstate Highway Act that the interstates must be safe at 70MPH. If that regulation is true, one can argue that the 55MPH limit is illegal, since they're setting a speed limit not because of safety reasons.

So riddle me this, if the right lane is averaging 15 under the speed limit and someone in the left lane is 'hogging' the lane and going 10 under the speed limit, aka faster traffic to the left and slower to the right, you agree with the person going 10 under being fined, because it might upset someone else?

This is the problem with feel good laws, they punish the normal people in an attempt to pacify others... Truth is that if a person is prone to road rage 9 under or 11 under isn't going to change the outcome, except for punishing the driver for not pacifying the driver that is prone to road rage...

with nearly 2 million miles under my butt, I think its an idea long over due. Iif everyone is going close to the posted speed the traffic flows better , accident are reduced because of less vehicle interaction and driving becomes less stressful causing less fatigue and road rage.

The problem we have is too many cars for the roads and every body driving at different speeds cause to many interactions by passing /getting passed. this leads to stress ,accidents , road rage etc.

the next problem they will have is getting enough police offices to patrol the roads and stop the ones that are moving too slow for traffic or to fast

While tailgating, flashing their headlights, weaving around like a squirrel on crack all because someone dared go the Speed Limit in that left lane!

Don't believe me get out on 90, 94 or 294 and go 65 MPH in the left lane as a 100% law abiding driver, or better yet go 56 so that you would be in compliance with this law if it was enacted in IL...... Making a law that punishes people and requires them to be within 10 MPH of the Speed Limit will not solve anything, it's simply a revenue generator for the police so they can hassle otherwise law abiding citizens...

I understand your hypothetical example, but I think it's a virtually nonexistent situation. If slower traffic kept to the right, traffic would move much better.

I drive approximately 35-40,000 miles a year and IMHO, nothing causes more congestion than people trying to change lanes to get around someone crawling along in the left lane. Just my opinion.

It's already against state law to "drive" in the left lane. You're supposed to be passing. But I bet no one has been stopped for JUST this violation. If there was a crack down, people from Tennessee would boycott the entire state. :frantics:

Non-existent? That neither lane is moving at the posted speed limit? I have done my fair share of driving across this country and I have found it quite common, especially in highly populated areas like the Chicago land area, or even on laid back country roads down south where there are plenty of people that are not concerned about getting somewhere 30 seconds faster...

In my example slower traffic was keeping left just like you suggest they do, but now the person in the fast lane is in violation of this proposed law for not going fast enough, even though he was going faster then the right lane...

Yeah, I have noticed that in many Southern states the left lane is reserved and posted for passing only, yet many/most choose to use it as a 'fast' lane vs the passing only lane that it is legally designated as...

Man,a guy with a traffic brain!!!! I have one million miles under my belt and you are exactly right in my opinion!!!!!

Yep,that's the way the world thinks today...."Go after that nut case with the road rage". You know,IF road rage is such a problem nowadays, then LETS FIGURE OUT WHO THE IDIOTS ARE THAT IS CAUSING THE PROBLEMS with soo many people getting mad!

Evidently you HAVE driven in Florida.I have abolutely nothing at all against elderly citizens but there IS a lot of them in Florida on the highways going,oh....lets say,30mph IN THE LEFT LANE and hitting the brake pedal when approched.

That IS the problem in Florida! I'm glad to see they are trying something different on their interstate highways,or take the back road to the flea markets.

Now tell me,IF you do this, driving using your mirroe instead of the front glass, when you DO decide the guy has had enough and move over to the right lane,do you SPEED UP AND STAY BESIDE THE CAR YOU JUST _______? If you do,YOU are the person that is causing the ROAD RAGE. That's right,1 out of 1000

It is clear that the "slower traffic keep right" and "left lane is passing lane only" law is designed ONLY make it easier for cops to nail speeders, all they have to do is look in the left lane.

I'm in favor of the 85th percentile law.

Typical pass the blame instead of accepting personal accountability for being unable to control yourself, sorry but it's not my job to cuddle the emotions you can't control...

You might want to consider attending anger management classes if someone going under a Speed Limit, not a Go This Speed makes you lose control, just saying...

Who drives under the speed limit? The "unofficial" speed limit on the chicago highways is 80-90 :ninja:

Well, if you and I ever wind up bumping into each other and my passing at the speed limit bothers you, I'll be happy to have a cop come and sort it out for us. :D Do you see the irony in what you're saying? Calling people out for driving the legal speed limit? As if they're imposing on your breaking the law? I'm not saying I've never sped, far be it from the truth, but if I'm breaking the law, I'm not going to fault someone who's observing it because they're in my way!! I stopped speeding years ago because I found it more relaxing. I didn't have to worry about switching lanes all the time, the stress of dealing with the timing, I just let people go around me. That and I save gas, the reduced noise and vibration. Oh and I figured out that speeding doesn't really save that much time anyway.

I always drive within 5mph of the posted speed limit. Period. I slow down when roads are wet or icy. The only time I speed up, possibly passed my barrier is if I am in the left lane and I need to pass or maneuver to let someone in/get over.

Look sometimes I get annoyed at people doing the speed limit in the right lane, but I accept it and back off them a few car lengths. The only time I'll get annoyed is when a driver thinks doing 45mph in a 65mph speed limit zone is a good idea, or like in PA- thinking that merging at 15mph on a 70mph highway is the best idea in the world, THEN MAINTAINING THAT SPEED.

I've got a pretty high threshhold for road annoyances. In the past 8 years I remember getting only mad enough to make a rude gesture two or three times. The old folks (parents)? HAH. bad.

Nobody, and I mean nobody does the 55mph limit on chicagoland's interstates. I'd venture to guess the unofficial limit is around 70. AKA the speed that won't draw ISP's attention. Most motorists are doing an avg of 80 IMHO.

Slower traffic keep right. Some get it, some don't. In rural areas, where there's less traffic, they seem to get it. In suburbia, not so much.

If you're in the left lane and not passing anyone, then you're breaking the law too, the same as I am for ignoring some arbitrary and unrealistic ridiculously slow limit.

But why one would prefer to drive the speed limit in the passing lane is a complete mystery. If someone wants to go the speed limit, that's fine. But that is what the right lane is for. Why would someone purposely get in other people's way by driving slowly in the passing lane?

I just went to SE Tennessee last week. 8 1/2 drive round about. I went 70-75 from Indiana to Knoxville. By far the biggest pain in my butt were those trying to do 80+ which lead them to force their way in the two car length gap in front of the trucks I was passing, which is real frequent if you've ever been from Lexington to Knoxville. I refuse to pull back in front of a vehicle doing ~70 without, at minimum, 100 feet between us. I think drivers in general need to learn to keep their peace and leave earlier if they're that pressed for time they gotta pass people on the right that are already going over the speed limit.

sorry - have an issue with this type of passing - would you pass the same way on a 2 lane road - likely you speed up and get the pass completed quickly

You're comparing apples and oranges. On a two lane road, you must complete the pass quickly or else you'll run head on into another car.

The left lane on an interstate - that won't happen unless someone while high went down the wrong ramp.

"Sir are you aware you were going 125mph in a 35mph?"

"But I wasn't planning on going 35 miles, I was just trying to go 3 miles."

I agree with the point that attempting to force the maximum and minimum be the same speed is stupid. The Brits have noticed that constant driver attention to maintaining exact speeds actually causes more accidents.

Tailgating is the universal way to say, "I want to pass". Not letting people pass is the universal way to say, "I'm an... um, real swell guy with no passive-aggressive issues at all."
