Don Gwinn Posted May 19, 2011 at 08:40 PM Share Posted May 19, 2011 at 08:40 PM Venting done? OK. I plan to spend more time in Chicago, not less. It's not a coincidence that the two biggest things to happen to the Illinois gun rights movement in the least ten years were the beginnings of cooperation between the different groups and the beginnings of serious grassroots organization in Chicagoland--and those two changes coincided with enormous successes. Indigo Posted May 20, 2011 at 01:20 AM Share Posted May 20, 2011 at 01:20 AM I agree, they are losing ground slowly. Yeah, they are still in this fight but man. I've never seen so many people at local gun stores in my life in this area! More and more people are becoming aware, and while its still a minority up here, its an important one. We need to find ways to reach out to these people and get them to join up. Get in contact with Cook County gun stores and say "hey, I know about this site called Illinois Carry and its fighting for our rights. You should talk to your customers about them". If we can get a sizable portion of that minority up here to join up, we could turn a lot of heads. Guys, the thing I'm seeing at IC is that everybody is frustrated with Chicago. The downstate/Chicago divide has always been a problem. Why should the people here at IC NOT reflect that division? It can be hard to remember that we're all on the same side, but we have to keep up the effort. While downstaters are frustrated with Chicago, you have to look at why the big cities have so many "leftie-liberal" types, and so many people who don't seem to care. I grew up in downstate Indiana, and Marion, Terre Haute, and Anderson are not very different from Peoria, Rockford, or Decatur. Remember the bright ambitious kids in your high school class who left for college and never came back? Remember the "artistic, sensitive" types who couldn't wait to get out of your hometown? Guess where they went? Chicago, New York, LA, San Francisco - anywhere that was "more exciting" or has "better opportunities". Lots of our "lakefront liberals" came from hometowns like yours. As for the ordinary citizen who is uninformed and apathetic, well, isn't that the definition of "ordinary citizen"? My wife and I run into the assumption from other Chicagoans that simply everybody is a Democrat, and that everybody is for gun control, and that everybody loves Richie Daley and voted for Obama. There are lots of people in downstate Illinois who could care less about issues that are important to us, and vote the same way their grandpa did because they have never taken the time to THINK about their situations. Just like here in Chicago. Add to that the extreme difficulty of "fighting City Hall and the Machine" and you have...Chicago! Might as well get mad at a dog for urinating on a fire hydrant. As someone said earlier, "it is what it is" and you have to work with that fact.
Howard Roark Posted May 20, 2011 at 01:57 AM Share Posted May 20, 2011 at 01:57 AM JR, you're a breath of fresh air here, and I mean that in an all good way. Meanwhile, I think this guy can help us on this website: http://www.nytix.com/repository/tvshows/Dr.%20Phil/drphil.jpg Remember, a little light humor is good medicine, and life's short so be kind to others and enjoy it. Good advice that I'm trying to follow.
Howard Roark Posted May 20, 2011 at 02:07 AM Share Posted May 20, 2011 at 02:07 AM It's like Wake Island up here. Cut off from any support, and left to die. Not true at all. What about the McDonald Four, Dr. G, and the others who live in Chicago and Cook? There is no better place to be in America than Chicago for people who fight for restoration of our Second Amendment Freedoms, and want to make a difference. Don't you agree? The action on the 2nd Amendment is not in rural Arizona, Alaska, or Wyoming. It's right here, right now, in Chicago.
Howard Roark Posted May 20, 2011 at 02:14 AM Share Posted May 20, 2011 at 02:14 AM I fight like heck up here, but there's no supportHey Bro, looking forward to your help at the Second Amendment Freedom Rally (SAFR) in Chicago again this year.Full Disclosure: I have been in past years but I have not helped except by attendance and cheering. Don Gwinn Posted May 20, 2011 at 03:19 AM Share Posted May 20, 2011 at 03:19 AM I'm not sure the date has been set. I'm sure IllinoisCarry members will be the first to know, though, they usually are. I'm hoping for July 8th since I have to be in Chicago on the 9th anyway. It's always nice when the cause can be arranged in such a way that it's personally convenient for me. We ignored Chicago for a long time and could never manage anything but defense. Then we began building organizations in Chicago and now we're on offense. It makes sense to me that we continue to build in Chicago and continue to win.

Steve O Posted May 20, 2011 at 03:51 AM Share Posted May 20, 2011 at 03:51 AM A apathetic friend lives in Rolling Meadows, Im gonna work on getting him and his wife to join here and get involved.. He is trapped in Crook county with the house and job... He ain't happy though!!! The reason I joined here was because I could just see and feel the tide turning and I don't think it's even come in yet It's easy to get discouraged, lots of reasons to be cynical.... Damn it how much more are we gonna put up with???

But it often seems when it comes to 2A rights people up here often find themselves alone in that fight. It's gotten better, and more popular up here. I've never seen so many 2A people in my life, or just more people in gun stores. I will attend any event I can, but I have no vacation time until March of 2011. I might be able to wiggle out of work one day, but the problem with working with family is, they know when my sick day isn't a real sick day . BigJim Posted May 20, 2011 at 02:11 PM Share Posted May 20, 2011 at 02:11 PM The thing that pisses me off about the downstate gang is that they group everyone north of I80 together. I live in Kane County (west of Cook) and we are pro 2A. We passed a 2A support referendum, had good turn out for our 2A town hall and have pro 2A representatives. wazzle Posted May 20, 2011 at 02:16 PM Share Posted May 20, 2011 at 02:16 PM You guys can't do anything from down there, SAFR and just about every other thing pro-2A in Chicago is ran by a 5' sweet heart from South of I-70 and it wouldn't happen without her. That's why they call her the unsinkable Molly B. I don't think there's ANYONE here who lives further south than Molly B. yet she understands that without gaining the support of the voters in Chicago and Crook County, nothing happens in Illinois. I live farther south than Molly, and there are a few of us here that do. One thing that has not been mentioned in all the rants is the Chicago media. Until we get the Sun Times, Tribune, Channels 2,5,7, and 9 covering our issues, it isn't going to happen. SAFR and IGOLD are basically ignored on any of the news programs there. They are covered more by the downstate media where it isn't really necessary. I don't have an answer as to how to engergize the media to start caring about our cause, but that is what it is going to take.
Chad Posted May 20, 2011 at 03:12 PM Share Posted May 20, 2011 at 03:12 PM "up state" people think you're all Hill Billy's and rednecks, and not in a good way. To quote my dear friend Benny, who is MUCH farther north than you (Canada eh, you think we have it tough with gun laws.) "Chad is not a rednek, He's an Appalachian Specialist....." ike Posted May 20, 2011 at 09:52 PM Share Posted May 20, 2011 at 09:52 PM I may be the furthest south since I can swim to Kentucky, but I'm on the south side 2-3 times a week and see the mess that effects everyone in the state.Maybe the members in that area need to start a forum like "ILLINOIS CARRY LITE" and network that through your friends and slowly introduce them to the idea that a gun may save a life and nudge them to the idea that all us "rednecks"down south wanting CCW are not a bunch of lawless hicks.Email all your friends the Mary Shepard video and let them see what the fight is for and what kind of a person may want a CCW permit.I know that I preach to my coworker that live in that area and keep them informed of what is happening will our gun-rights. over time, they have become more interested and one has even gotten Foid cards and a shotgun for home protection for his wife.
