Howard Roark Posted December 8, 2010 at 02:37 AM Posted December 8, 2010 at 02:37 AM Awesome collection of firearms for sale! I may go and bid some stuff, but I don't think any of you should bother going, and spending next Saturday buying **ANOTHER** gun. Better you work on that honey-do list instead. I don't know much about Judge Kuhn, but r.i.p.
Tvandermyde Posted December 8, 2010 at 02:38 AM Posted December 8, 2010 at 02:38 AM #1 Bud stay out of my back yard. This is my sand box for deals. I knew Carl and served with him on the ISRA board. a nice man and fine gentleman. Tragedy as to what happened to him.

I could get a loudspeaker and mount on my roof to play "Reveille" (hit "stop" on the other one to hear them separaetly) and then BLAM!!!!followed by "To The Colors" as the National Colors are raised I bet my neighbors would love it!

Air Commando Posted December 8, 2010 at 12:47 PM Posted December 8, 2010 at 12:47 PM If someone is going can you please bid on the Marlin 45/70 guide gun for me? I would love to be there but I'm playing with the Army at Ft Dix, NJ right now. I don't want to go any higher than $300 and I have the cash (and of course FOID) but if possible would like to make this happen. I just don't want to pay retail once I get done with my training and deployment.

Xwing Posted December 8, 2010 at 07:54 PM Posted December 8, 2010 at 07:54 PM Has anyone here ever been to something like this (estate auction)? I see one item there I am very interested in, but have never been to an auction before. How do you know when a certain item will be called? Do they list the order of the auction? Also, how long do these things run? I have an important medical appointment Sat morning as well, that I cannot miss. Do they get through 200+ items in an hour, or is it more like 4 or 5 hours? Any way to know if a specific item is late on the block, and show up 2 hours after the auction starts? Anything else I should know before driving all the way to Yorkville? Any help would be appreciated. Also, do items usually go for a very-much below-market price at these auctions? The item I want, I would not be willing to pay what it normally goes for used in stores. My max price is 75%-80% of its "normal" used price from a store, but is within the realm of reason for prices I've seen in a "best-case" sale. (e.g. one sale on gunbroker went for virtually my price, but the rest of the ones on there right now are too high.)

I've been to a few and they have no set order but, I have done it and seen it done where an auctioneer will bring an item FWD on a request. The only way to know is to approach the auctioneer and ask him. Most oblige. I forgot to mention, go on the auction website and see if they will take sealed/pre-auction bids. That way he will bid for you up to the limit you have set.
markthesignguy Posted December 8, 2010 at 10:39 PM Posted December 8, 2010 at 10:39 PM Carl Kuhn may not have been on Illinois Carry, but he was ONE OF US!!!! That gun collection that is being auctioned off? He was MURDERED for it. edit - at the least, we should acknowledge this with a thread title change, Huge Firearm Auction in YorkvilletoHuge Firearm Auction of Former ISRA official Carl Kuhn's collection in Yorkville. Two men have been charged with the murder of retired Bartlett attorney Carl Kuhn, 82, during a Friday home invasion aimed at stealing his large gun collection, DuPage County authorities said today. Kuhn originally had been reported to have died from natural causes, and his obituary in the Tribune today reflected that. Retired lawyer, gun collector killed by ex-client, authorities say 2nd man charged in smothering death of man in unincorporated Bartlett By Art Barnum and Gerry Smith Tribune reporters August 26, 2009 Retired attorney Carl Kuhn was 82 when he died at home, so no one doubted his sons when they said for public consumption that he had died of natural causes. But all the while, they knew that DuPage County detectives thought something was suspicious and had opened a homicide investigation. The house, near Bartlett in unincorporated DuPage County, appeared to have been ransacked, Assistant State's Atty. Robert Berlin said. Sheriff's investigators were interested in a phone call that Kuhn received earlier that day from Terry Bratcher, 43, an ex-con who had become close friends with his former attorney, often visiting the much older man's house, working on his cars and taking him out to movies. Kuhn had become so close with his former client that Bratcher was welcome to enter Kuhn's home without knocking, said Kuhn's son Eric. On Tuesday, Bratcher and Keith Allen, 21, were facing murder charges, accused of smothering Kuhn with a pillow. The victim was an avid gun collector, and Allen and Bratcher took 43 guns during the home invasion Friday, officials said. The weapons were later found in Bratcher's garage in West Chicago, authorities said. <snip> Kuhn briefly served with the Glen Ellyn Police Department before embarking on a 52-year career as a criminal defense attorney. A staunch gun-rights advocate, Kuhn was a past officer with the Illinois State Rifle Association. Recently, the only reason Kuhn left the house was to attend meetings with the Friends of NRA and the state rifle association, his son said. After working on Kuhn's car several weeks ago, Bratcher borrowed a gun from him, claiming he was having problems with some young men, prosecutors said. On Friday, Bratcher, carrying a 45-caliber pistol, entered the home with Allen, officials said. After subduing Kuhn, Bratcher and Allen placed him in a chairlift to a second-floor bedroom, covering his head with a jacket and a pair of men's underwear, both of which were later found in Bratcher's home, authorities said. Bratcher then straddled Kuhn and pushed his head into a pillow, according to a demonstration he gave on video, Berlin said. Eric Kuhn said detectives told him that Bratcher later returned with his mother to the victim's house, called 911 and told authorities they had found the man dead. <snip> Because the murder was carried out during the commission of another felony, the defendants may be subject to the death penalty. First Degree Murder carries a minimum sentence of 20-60 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC). Allen appeared in Bond Court this morning where Judge Peter Ostling ordered he be held on $3 million full cash bond. At Bratcher’s Bond Court hearing Judge George Bakalis ordered that Bratcher be held without bond. The men are both scheduled for arraignment on September 21 in front of Judge Bakalis. Tvandermyde Posted December 9, 2010 at 01:24 AM Posted December 9, 2010 at 01:24 AM I was at one of their auctions early in the years where I bought an orginal open bolt MAC 10 in 45acp. There was no order in whcih they went. they just seemed to start at one end and go to the other end fo the table. There were a lot of Model 25 S&W revolvers. a ton of 1911s. Almost all of the 1911s went for $1000. I quit bidding at $500. Some of the guns went retail, FN/FAL some above what they were worth some below. I paid $600 for the MAC witht he phony suppressor and 6 mags. I think only two of us knew what it was. I knew what it was worth. There was a citori that I should have stayed on a bit more, but it's not really my kind of gun. I did buy about 30,000 primers. I got them for about 1/2 retail. There were a TON of bullets and if I had known what their value was I might have bid a bit more. But a couple guys with a reloanding biz were scooping them up. I also spotted some dealers in the crowd and they would take guns up to their cost. It all depends on what you are looking for. They had a preview, as another auction was taking place prior to the start, and it ran long. There were about 250 -- 300 people there last time. My advise, get there a bit early so you can look the stuff over, and get a bid sheet if need be. Look up the guns your interested in and figure out what your willing to bid on them or what you think they are worth. Look at the start of the auction and see if they do what they did last time, start at one end, but then the skipped around a bunch and my gun was one of the last guns before going to the reloading stuff. But kow what stuff is worth and what you are willing to pay. This isn't the dealer I had last year that I wrote about.
Machine Posted December 9, 2010 at 01:53 AM Posted December 9, 2010 at 01:53 AM I did not know about this story. It is a really sad example of the terrible things that people can do and makes me ashamed to be part of the same species as the murderers. My wife says that people get their due eventually. If this is true, Bratcher will need to slowly burn in heck for an eternity.
Tvandermyde Posted December 12, 2010 at 04:48 PM Posted December 12, 2010 at 04:48 PM did anyone go to the auction?
Machine Posted December 13, 2010 at 12:18 AM Posted December 13, 2010 at 12:18 AM did anyone go to the auction? I went. It was a long auction and they didn't start the guns till close to 11 I think it was. The scout went for way over 300 (poster above), I think maybe 450 or more. The prices overall were pretty high and it was well attended. It was packed. I got a 1896 Krag and 1908 German Schwarzlose handgun which is blow-forward instead of a blow-back design. I may have overpaid, but it doesn't bother me since any premium is benefiting the family of this tragic incident.
