County Board backs Second Amendment movement
Posted: Tuesday, Jul 03, 2007 - 03:09:01 pm EDT
The Wabash County Board of Commissioners approved of a movement supporting the Second Amendment at the county board meeting Monday.
The measure is a reaction against a “restrictive” firearms legislation being introduced by Cook County legislators. Sheriff Joe Keeling and former sheriff Terry McWilliams were at the County Board meeting in support of the proposal.
Keeling mentioned that the banning of all firearms would only take guns away from the innocent citizens. He added that criminals would find a way to get their guns illegally. The proposal will be sent to Springfield to the governor.
Similar letters of support have already been signed in Brown, Hancock, Pike, Johnson, Schuyler, Randolph, White, and recently Edwards, counties. This statement shows Wabash County’s support of the second amendment and of other Southern Illinois counties.

I did get to talk to a pulaski County Deputy today on the phone. It seem that Pulaski County Board has received the resolution, and according to the deputy, they want to check on a few things. He did state thst most of the people he has talked to are for the idea. He said that it will probably get passed in the next meeting or so. Also on that note, Pope County is supposed to pass the resolution this coming Tuesday, 7-10-07. I will keep you all informed of any thing further.

What if we got the county sheriffs involved with this resolution? I do know from talking to other people that there are a few sheriffs that are hoping that Illinois does get CCW. They say that would make some parts of their job easier. It may be worth a try.

Seeing your letter to the editor reminded me that I had neglected to respond to your correspondence regarding the right to bear arms resolution.
I am not on the Policy Committee, which would likely consider the resolution initially,
but I would wholeheartedly support it if it comes before the full board.

Needless to say, I've alreay thanked him!

I’ve been sort of talk into speaking before the board on the matter.
I’m not much of a speaker, so may need reinforcements. Coach or Molly, or both, are you up to it, as my back up’s?
Meeting usually start around 7-7:30 PM.

Adams County just passed their own resolution, and it even made the news.

The Adams County Board approved a resolution Tuesday opposing the enactment of any legislation infringing upon the public's right to keep and bear arms.
The resolution was passed unanimously without discussion, making Adams County the latest in a string of Illinois counties to approve a resolution of this nature, including several in the immediate area.
The County Board's Legislative and Judicial Committee presented the resolution for consideration. Dave Bockhold, committee chairman, said the resolution was developed in response to some pending legislation that could ban certain firearms used for hunting or recreational shooting. The pending legislation is said to be supported by Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
"There's been a lot of downstate counties passing this same type of resolution. We're just making a statement so they know where we stand," Bockhold said.
Bockhold said he doesn't like the idea of seeing state gun laws becoming tougher on law-abiding citizens who have the right under the U.S. Constitution to bear firearms.
"I'm a sportsman, a shooter," he said. "I imagine Mayor Daley and the governor rubbed me the wrong way with this stuff. That's where it's all coming from."
The resolution says, in part, that the people of Adams County not only oppose any legislation that would infringe upon the right to keep and bear arms, but also "consider such laws to be unconstitutional and beyond lawful legislative authority."
Bockhold said he's not sure whether the resolution "carries any weight. But we just wanted to go on record and make a statement so they know we're here."

I tried to find out about Pope cty this morning, but I could not get hold of the guy that sent the resolution to the board. I am glad that they passed it . So now I am waiting on Massac and Pulaski to see what they do. Glad Pope is in.
