Wikipedia has an ok article about them http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mettawa,_Illinois From what I recall, it was an unincorporated town for a long time, then Lake Forest tried to annex it and in response they incorporated in 1960. It's actually a very nice area if you ever get up there. Surrounded by forest preserves, large lots, very peaceful.
