SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan is urging Gov. Pat Quinn to sign legislation allowing the carrying of concealed guns.

The Chicago Democrat said Tuesday that a veto would be ineffective. The concealed carry legislation the General Assembly approved last month passed by votes large enough to override a gubernatorial veto. Illinois is the last U.S. state to prohibit the public possession of concealed guns. A federal appeals court declared the ban unconstitutional in December. It ordered a remedy by June 9 - which it later extended to July 9.

Quinn - also a Chicago Democrat - has not said what position he'll take on the bill but has expressed concerns for strong restrictions on firearms.

Madigan predicted Quinn would act in a way that benefits his re-election campaign in 2014.

Maybe he should tell his daughter to stop jerking us around then?

i think his daughter was doing a CYA for election time.

I'm not sure what her game is. I would think by getting extensions, she is doing the Quinn a favor. I would think it would be to her advantage to let Quinn swing in the breeze on this one.

her game is now her deadline extends past quinns so if he doesnt do anything about it she can just wash her hands of it.. when her deadline was before quinns he could wait and veto it and blame her for not appealing it to scotus.. its all about election time right now.

We shall see . A close friend of mine has a wife that is a staunch democrat involved in collar county politics having held a political position for 3 terms and now elected to a village board . She says Lisa is nothing like her dad and has a mind of her own. That has led to many a long discussion and we have a case of bourbon bet on that one . Like i said we shall see , she also says Lisa has the election all locked up already . She made that statement at a Christmas party last December before her first drink. I swear i should have bet her 10 cases .

Well I think her time table was up so she got an extension to put the ball back in quinn's court.

He doesn't want his daughter to take it to SCOTUS and he knows she is dumb enough to try.

Daddy to the rescue again.

.

That would be my guess, if the cliff happens blame will be on both Lisa and Quinn, they will point fingers endlessly and the voting public will take it at face value, and it won't swing many votes either way...

The only way Lisa walks away now without controversy is for Quinn to sign the law leaving her off to hook for a SCOTUS appeal, if he doesn't sign the cliff happens and fingers will be pointing at everyone, her for not appealing, Quinn for not signing and the General Assembly for dragging their feet to the last day to pass anything...

Now you can say that more blame is on him or her or them, but the fact is the general voting public is oblivious to most if not all of the facts and they will only take the smear campaign commercials at face value no matter how it's spun... Just like the General Assembly will do to all the people who voted 'pro gun' during the circus of amendments to the carry bill(s)...

I thought Lisa was just following Quinns orders, doesn't she work for him?

No, two different branches of the government, he can 'ask' her to do things but she is under no obligation to follow the governors request...

She is representing her client.

How do you figure?

Has she taken a survey to see if a majority of people in IL want CCW or not? Or do SAs just assume every law on the books are good or even constitutional?

She works for the state govt, that's why she's running the defense when they get sued over 2a violations.

I totally believe this - especially after a very informative (for me) chat with Todd on this very subject earlier this evening.
