Everybody wants to know what happened. Today on the House floor, it was spelled out. From the Tribine:

“Madigan noted that anti-gun lawmakers got only 31 of 60 votes need for a strict, New York-styled bill called in the House in April. But he said gun rights lawmakers-- whose legislation overrode home-rule and required 71 votes ended up with 64-- even significantly after the speaker said he worked against the bill.

Madigan said gun rights advocates had estimated they had as many as 75 votes at the “high-water mark” before the speaker worked against that version of the bill.

“Those vote counts are very telling,” Madigan said. “They tell the reason why I stand before you today, changing the position which I’ve advocated for well over 20 years. But that’s what happens in a democracy.”

From the Suntimes:

“In mid-April, concealed-carry legislation drafted by gun-control advocates failed by drawing only 31 votes in the House. A day later, a bill written by gun-rights forces drew 64 votes, a total below the 71 votes it needed but still far more than its rival plan.

Madigan said the NRA-backed plan originally had 75 votes before he worked against it and peeled off 11 votes.”

Thanks for all the well wishes and support. I do feel I let people down for trying to be so optimistic about the kind of bill we could have passed, and we were right to reach for the stars. But there were larger forces working against us.

I think it's great ... but then again I understand some of those forces working against us in Illinois. Just get that thing through the senate without amendation and get that veto safely over-ridden. Some of those less ideal issues can be fixed in time. Even the most gun-friendly states in the nation have issues to be fixed. Good work everyone.

we have years to make it the way you want it Todd, for all of us. i'm just glad you are on our side.

No worries.

Help us get Public Transportation dropped in the fall.

We have more work to do.

.

This.

Great job so far Todd!

Public transit and lower fees for poor folks need to be pushed for in the future.

It's going to continue to be a long fight in this state for a fundamental human right but we'll get there.

This here is the biggest, most difficult part. No battle or war ends perfect. Thanks for your part Todd, and thanks everyone out there who were vocal to their reps.

So far more than I ever expected from Illinois. It could be so much worse. I got stationed in Illinois 20 y/a and have been stuck ever since. So looking to the future and knowing that Illinois may not be the draconian, socialist, cesspool that I've lived with for so many years.

Thank you for your tireless work Todd.

I hope this flies through the senate!

Todd. I knew you benched yourself for the good of the team. You have NOTHING! I repeat, NOTHING! To feel bad about. We actually have Madigan pushing for a "shall issue" bill. You and Brandon both fought imposible odds to get us here. THANK YOU! (8y the way, great choice of caliber).

Thanks Todd. Does Madigan have the power to get it through senate?

IIRC Madigan is the head of the Illinois democratic party which gives him the control of the purse strings at election time. He didn't even bother to be in the house untill the lsat few minutes of debate today. Some on bluestream chat mentioned Madigan just walked onto the floor and a few minutes later everyone was done speaking. He spoke for something like twlve minutes and no one asked him to finish his remarks. I also seem to remember either Todd or Molly commenting it was Madigan who stopped the Raoul bill from having the votes in the Senate so it was never called. I don't see Madigan doing what he did today and then loosing, no way. Jim.

Todd, You have done an exceptional job in a very hard political environment! If not for the work the you and Brandon did, we would not be close to where we are today. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed, and are very appreciated! I would be honored to buy you or Brandon a beer if ever we meet. The same goes for Molly and ABolt as well! They have done a great job moderating this board. A thankless job at time..

Have a great holiday weekend to all!

One state law.

Shall issue.

Preemption of home rule.

Preemption of ALL firearms laws to the state level.

Killing the Cook County and Chicago AWB, CFP, and Cook County violence tax all in one fell swoop.

And getting Madigan to not only allow its passage, but speak for 12 minutes urging its passage????

Todd, where I come from, that's not what we call a victory...that's what we call opening a can of whoop(censored)!!!!!

You have done right by us, as we always knew you would. No more of this talk of letting us down. None of us feel that way. You reached for the stars. That's your job. Difference is, you only pulled a few of those stars down to us yesterday. Most who reach for the stars never pull any of them down.

Madigan runs the house for sure. We're about to find out if he really runs the state, when the bill hits the senate.

Todd you did you best and anyone who thinks otherwise just doesn't know. I had mixed feelings about wanting this bill to pass. I remained neutral. Now that it's here and nearly a reality the best we can do is continue to work to improve the bill, change some language, etc... It's bad but not as bad as it could be. No doubt it would be worse without you. Thanks!
