Elmer_Fudd Posted May 22, 2013 at 03:37 PM Posted May 22, 2013 at 03:37 PM Heard about this opening on the radio today. Gander Mountain has opened a Firearms Superstore. Apparently it's not your standard Gander Mountain store. http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/storelocator.cgi?r=storeDetails&storeID=185

Patriots & Tyrants Posted May 22, 2013 at 03:55 PM Posted May 22, 2013 at 03:55 PM They have one up in Wisconsin too, never been but a co-worker has.I am sorry, No I won't pay $800.00 for a heavily used P228. Gander mountain seems to be the highest priced of all the major "chain" stores that offer firearms.
Tompo Posted May 22, 2013 at 04:17 PM Posted May 22, 2013 at 04:17 PM There's a Gander Mountain in Geneva, on Randall Rd., their prices on everything, guns, including fishing/tackle supplies, is outrageous.
solareclipse2 Posted May 22, 2013 at 04:18 PM Posted May 22, 2013 at 04:18 PM I've never been to a Gander Mountain but I thought about checking this out. Too bad they don't have a flyer up. I'd like to check it out before we drive all the way out there.
RockerXX Posted May 22, 2013 at 04:23 PM Posted May 22, 2013 at 04:23 PM As a child and teen Gander Mountain was the place to go if you wanted something, that was 20-30 years ago... But, I have not been there in probably 10 years now, they simply lost their way and lost their appeal...
Livewire18 Posted May 22, 2013 at 04:45 PM Posted May 22, 2013 at 04:45 PM Gander mountain has always been a little high, except when i got them to sell me my Gen 3 Glock 22C (VERY little use, and not blemishes at all) for $350 about 6 years ago.... Yeah, $350. Still looks darn near new to this day even though it has had 1000's of rounds through it. I still talk about that price today even. The sales man said it was mis-priced, but I said I don't care. They sold it to me for that price.
thornstein Posted May 22, 2013 at 06:24 PM Posted May 22, 2013 at 06:24 PM Peoria's store is awesome. I buy my guns from Pekin Gun Store so I'm not on top of the firearm prices there. They have gear and clothes from Blackhawk, UA Tactical, and 5.11. Maxpedition bags, awesome gloves, and tactical boots out the wazoo. There's a lot to soak up when you're in there. I told my boys that if there father is deserving of any gifts this year for Father's Day, make it a GM gift card.
Cec Posted May 22, 2013 at 07:14 PM Posted May 22, 2013 at 07:14 PM The Gander Mountain in Hobart Indiana has been completely remodeled. It has as many rifles and shotguns as Cabelas and they definitely have more pistols and revolvers. Their prices on Firearms are competitive, but their ammo is still high. They no longer have anything other than firearms and firearm\hunting related equipment. I was pleasantly surprised with their remodel.
anonymous too Posted May 24, 2013 at 05:11 AM Posted May 24, 2013 at 05:11 AM As a child and teen Gander Mountain was the place to go if you wanted something, that was 20-30 years ago... But, I have not been there in probably 10 years now, they simply lost their way and lost their appeal... Gander was a catalog business back then and Cabela's bought them out with a non compete-clause stating the company could never operate a catalog business again. Who knew what the internet would become back in the early 90's. Same name, but different ownership group started small stores in 2000. If memory serves me correctly, the Geneva store was the new company's first "mega" store. Gander does have online sales, but not a catalog business like Cabela's, Bass Pro, etc.
BobPistol Posted May 24, 2013 at 12:35 PM Posted May 24, 2013 at 12:35 PM I checked it out and saw that the prices were higher on guns. One pistol I was looking at at the Wisconsin location was $50 more than Gurnee, IL.
Rem870 Posted May 24, 2013 at 12:44 PM Posted May 24, 2013 at 12:44 PM Stores like Gander Mountain and Bass Pro are nothing more than a place to 'try before you buy' to me. Their prices are always to high, so I check things out there and then buy it online or from a local business if possible. I know they have a lot higher of an overhead, but if they werent trying to be an attraction with taxidermy everywhere and fish tanks, etc, then maybe they could sell their stuff a little cheaper. Thats the way I look at it.
AlphaKoncepts aka CGS Posted May 24, 2013 at 02:04 PM Posted May 24, 2013 at 02:04 PM There is a similiar thread discussing the topic. I hope they don't put too many mom and pop business out of business.

anonymous too Posted May 25, 2013 at 10:28 PM Posted May 25, 2013 at 10:28 PM A good gun store will benefit and increase their sales being near one of the superstores. A poorly run one or one already in finacially poor shape will end up closing. I experienced the first and the second happen to a competitor.
