I'm thinking about taking a little drive down to Cabela's in Hammond to make a little purchase. I know the Cabela's in Hoffman Estates is a LOT closer, but it's also happens to be in a county which recently imposed a $25 tax for "certain" purchases, and I'm not going to give said county the satisfaction of collecting any more of my hard earned $$ than it already has!
Anyway, does anybody have any opinion of Cabela's in Hammond? I just don't want to drive all the way down there and be treated like the ******nozzles at Mega Sports treats there customers.

I don't think it's a bad place (aside from being a bit pricey), but you're not going to find handgun ammunition (or a LOT of handguns you might be looking for) there. I picked up my handgun last Saturday from Pelcher's in Lansing, drove to Cabela's to see if they had .45ACP ammunition. WHOLE handgun ammo shelf bare. I mean, miniature tumbleweeds rolling through it.
There's no way to skirt the Crook County tax unless you buy in one of the other 102 Felonois counties. Federal law prohibits the sale of handguns (rifles and shotguns okay, I believe) to a non-resident of the state of sale. I'm not 10 miles from that Cabela's, and I'd have to have them transfer a handgun to an FFL here, which ends up eating any money saved on the price and tax difference.

They'll treat you right at Cabelas in Hammond, but bear in mind, (1) there is not a huge selection of handguns, (2) You probably won't score any ammo, (3) You'll have to do an FFL transfer back over the border.
I've had nothing but good experiences there, but I'd rather give my business to local shops.
Damnit! I thought "May issue" meant they just issued me my permit in the month of May!

Thanks, guys! Yeah, I already called GATS, and they don't have what I'm looking for. And WCD and Blackhawk are right about the FFL transfer fee, which would end-up costing me the same (if not more) as the county tax I'm trying to avoid. Well, it looks like Cabela's in Hoffman Estates will have to do.

What I've found lately is you can find many great deals on firearms from online retailers, if you know what you're looking for. Many have free shipping and you avoid paying sales tax also. Have it shipped to your FFL which most charge around $25 for the transfer.

Cabela's in indiana is just as good as Hoffman Estates...except if you buy a gun there they will charge you the transfer fee to transfer back to an FFL in IL. I thinks Hoffman Estates has a slightly bigger selection but I might just be imagining things.
GAT is awesome. Great place.
