Tvandermyde Posted May 18, 2013 at 01:59 AM Posted May 18, 2013 at 01:59 AM Today was supposed to be the day the Senate voted on the bad carry bill, HB-183. But the vote did not take place as they were short the required 30 votes. The President is putting enormous pressure on democratic members to find the 30 votes to pass the bill. A couple of downstate senators considering statewide runs have commented that they will vote for any carry law that comes to the floor. Either a bad one or a good one. Senator Raoul held a press conference after the senate session blaming intimidation and extremists for blocking the passage of his bill. Maybe a bunch of people figured out – It’s a BAD BILL. The House and Senate have adjourned till Monday, so we are back in the saddle again for another round of this. I expect the arm twisting and bone breaking to continue through the weekend to see if they can find the votes. One rumor is that the House had an effect on some senate votes. Also on Monday we expect to have a committee hearing on a magazine ban. Amendment #2 has been filed by Senator Kotowski and seems to be a stretch. Still looking it over and analyzing it. Mere possession appears to be gone and you can keep what you have but don’t look to be able to loan a friend a gun or mag at the range without committing a felony. Look for a positional paper you can use and get to your senators over the weekend Over in the House there appear to be some talks going on around passing a carry law. And Representative Phelps made some comments about some alleged changes they are considering. I have a meeting with them set for Monday. To go over issues related to their talks. No details yet just some speculation. But there appears to be a sincere effort to pass a carry bill. At this point we have not been provided any language as we are told the bill is not written yet. When we see it and get a copy of it, we will digest it and go over it line by line, page by page. Since neither we nor I have been a part of these talks, I really don’t know what is in or what is out. I can only go by some press accounts, and while concerning, I don’t always trust the press to get it right. Personally, I have been committed to not leaving the people of Chicago or Cook County behind an iron curtain of oppression on their Second Amendment rights. That remains at the top of the list with our slogan you all came up with one state – one law. It appears that the Senate bill was an attempt to head off some sort of bill in the House as a means of showing that they can overcome the NRA and gun owners in general to pass a wish washy piece of garbage bill. Something tells me they fear what the House is doing. They fear it enough to be twisting arms and berating members in the senate. One report had the Governor’s people on the floor huddled up with the Senate leadership just prior to the announcement of the adjournment. It would also appear that the Governor fears what the House is working on and that he may be put in the trick bag. Coupled with the look on the Exec. Dir. Of ICHV’s face when she got a call that we can only guess was about their bill not being called, they seem to be very nervous about what is brewing in the House. They also seem very annoyed that they were tubed today. We will reserve judgment until we can see a product. This is a messy business at times. Not always fun and not always pretty. Both personally and professionally I am committed to getting us the best bill possible. This has been a 20 year fight. And we are heading into the 9th round.
Dave D Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:03 AM Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:03 AM POPCORN for Monday! Thanks for the update!
SAXD9 Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:03 AM Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:03 AM Thanks for the update Todd. Glad to hear that we killed the bill, even if it is just temporary.
Livewire18 Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:06 AM Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:06 AM Thanks for all your hard work Todd. We all appreciate it.
Booxone Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:11 AM Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:11 AM Thanks Todd. Is the feeling that if we can get a decent bill out of the house, will it make it through the senate?
TyGuy Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:14 AM Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:14 AM Why on Earth is Todd not directly part of writing the bill? Cliff here we come. It seems neither house wants to do the right thing, rather they want the credit for whatever law they pass. Stalemate at its best....or worst.
johnsxdm Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:14 AM Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:14 AM I've said it before and I'll say it again ,,,,,,,, TODD, YOU DA MAN !!
chip Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:18 AM Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:18 AM I think the next 2 weeks will be the longest of the year.
vactor Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:19 AM Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:19 AM i went to the meeting the the ICAHV representative Mark Walsh this week. even though thinly attended, i think i was able to get a few of the attendees thinking about what their bad bill means. an original supporter of the lost/stolen who scoffed me at first seemd to come around a bit after i had a back and forth with mark, as did 2 of the other attendess when i started discussing the difference between a RIGHT and a RECOMMENDATION. all in all frustrating to have someone with such a myopic and selfish viewpoint on one side with that much power in the game. i thank you again Todd for the hard work you and your cohorts are putting in. it truly does NOT go un noticed. i also managed to convince a few more people i knew to fill out witness slips and make a call. it's hard to get people to do even the simplest things, but i figure i managed to turn my one voice into four with a bit of effort. keep it up. i think we all hope that we get something reasonable (in the eyes of the people who love their fellow man and read the constitution) and support you in helping us get there. and if we don't, it won't be for lack of effort, work, sacrifice and UNITY! thanks!
handyflyer Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:24 AM Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:24 AM Thank you Todd!!!! I support you 110% and I hope all other members will trust you to bring us the BEST bill we can get.
Grey Beret Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:25 AM Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:25 AM Why on Earth is Todd not directly part of writing the bill? Cliff here we come. It seems neither house wants to do the right thing, rather they want the credit for whatever law they pass. Stalemate at its best....or worst. Good update Todd. Thanks. That explains a lot. Don't let them run over you because you are the front lines. Trust us to back you up but don't let them get away with a watered down piece of crap. If we can't kill it, we can sure try. I would rather wait for years more to get back to this point rather than accept a trap for gun owners to get caught in. Penalties, too many rounds in a mag, forgetting to unload when on a bus, and such. We don't have to accept. Otherwise I would like to associate myself with Ty's post as well.
Grey Beret Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:30 AM Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:30 AM I think the next 2 weeks will be the longest of the year. That is for sure. That is especially true since my fears were confirmed with Todd's update. There are some people willing to vote for anything. Well, we can not accept anything. "Anything" is not good enough. They will not let a good bill come to the floor until their bag of tricks is empty and we don't need to enact one of their "tricks".
Buckfarrack Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:31 AM Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:31 AM I'm still in! KEEP CALLING FOLKS! KEEP CALLING FOLKS!!
BackForward Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:34 AM Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:34 AM Why on Earth is Todd not directly part of writing the bill? Cliff here we come. It seems neither house wants to do the right thing, rather they want the credit for whatever law they pass. Stalemate at its best....or worst. Because he is a lobbyist, not a politician. From what it sounds like, Todd has been shut out from the closed-door negotiations going on with Phelps and the other democrats, which may be the strategy. We need the on the fence politicians to flip their votes to our side, whom are all also democrats.Having Phelps speaking to his colleagues directly letting them know it's his carry bill, not the NRA's, could calm alot of nerves and give them more confidence to support it. As let's face it, the NRA has been on an all out assault trashing the president and the democrats going on months now, they haven't exactly given them any reason to support a thing the NRA wants,..
blazzinbird Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:38 AM Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:38 AM Bf I take it your not a fan of the NRA?
snooter Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:42 AM Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:42 AM the mag restriction is crap..that i want down in flames and i will be calling..a felony for loaning?..heck it aint no felony to sell crack on the corner..well it is but lets face it even a crack dealer usually walks with a fine and a slap...the mag issue just frosts me (as does any semi auto ban BS)...i see the whole mag issue as pay back for CCW..they are worried and i suspect the realization they cannot stop it (ccw) has set in....i am not going to get to worked up until we finally see the CCW bill...no mag bans..no semi auto bans...and a great ccw law
TyGuy Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:42 AM Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:42 AM The President does a good enough job trashing himself. I do like your take that Todd's presence could be untenable to some. Count today as a victory, rest over the weekend, and be prepared to fight again come Monday. We only have 22 days from today to go.
BackForward Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:48 AM Posted May 18, 2013 at 02:48 AM Bf I take it your not a fan of the NRA? You need to look at it from the democrat's side. Again this is just speculation, but if that is the strategy, it's not a bad one. Phelps keep in mind is a democrat, and showing his colleagues he's not a shill for the NRA, but a fellow democrat who's also a strong supporter of the 2nd amendment and wishes to get a fair, honest bill will do much more to flip the fence sitters, than to show up with a bill drafted by the NRA, giving off the impression he's a "sell out" to a lobby group that has been trashing the crap out of their party and the president,...

I don't know if BackForward likes the NRA or not, or is a Democrat or not... But honestly, I think he is probably on to the truth here. The left both in Illinois and Nation wide have been constantly attacking the NRA for awhile now. The NRA isn't shy about firing back. It may be that Rep Phelps is trying to do something intentionally without having the NRA name attached to it, simply to provide some cover for some of the fence sitters who may not want to be seen supporting something put out there by the "Evil" NRA... I believe that it is some strategery... Hopefully, what he is putting together will hold up to the sniff test. But if it doesn't, and it turns out to be a turd, we can all mobilize against it then. No reason to get worked up over anything yet. At least nothing that Phelps is doing. Yet... If you want to be worked up, aim it towards the garbage the Senate is cooking up right now with the magazine bans et al...
azone5 Posted May 18, 2013 at 03:23 AM Posted May 18, 2013 at 03:23 AM Thanks Todd. No bad bill. One state...
HurselBrian Posted May 18, 2013 at 03:46 AM Posted May 18, 2013 at 03:46 AM Thanks again to Todd for all of the timely updates this past week. I think BF is making a lot of sense here. Why not extend an olive branch to the fence sitters? Besides, as we have seen, this whole thing has been more about appearance and saving face than anything else. If a rep can stand up and say that he/she was forced to approve a bill because the court said so, but at least they "stood up" to the big bad NRA, they might just be able to make it more palatable to their anti gun constituents. We wouldn't have to tell that it is basically our bill, that could be our secret. Brian
GlockShooter Posted May 18, 2013 at 03:57 AM Posted May 18, 2013 at 03:57 AM Thanks Todd. Keep doing your thing, and try to enjoy the weekend!
Patriots & Tyrants Posted May 18, 2013 at 04:10 AM Posted May 18, 2013 at 04:10 AM Keep it up Todd, we believe in you! We believe in the dream of shall issue CC in Illinois! In Todd we trust!
Bhawk99 Posted May 18, 2013 at 04:23 AM Posted May 18, 2013 at 04:23 AM Thanks again Todd for your informative updates and all your many years of fighting for all our 2nd amendment rights. If it wasn't for the NRA, ISRA and great web sites like Illinois Carry we would not be anywhere near the big victory we will be celebrating in just a few more weeks. One State One Law. Lets get er done boys !!!
