I had a long post and just lost it, so I will settle with the question... Did anyone else hear the interview with sheriff Dart this morning (Cook county)? I thought it was a good interview on the part of WLS. What was your take on it?

I didnt get to hear it. but here are some quotes from their twitter feed...

Dart is a politician. Always makes it sound so "reasonable" then you get to read his actual proposed law.

From the 89 twitter feed:

  1.
Sheriff Dart: "The Supreme Court interprets the meaning of the Constitution and I will uphold what they rule"

Sheriff Dart: "Both sides will never agree on conceal and carry"

I wonder if this is Dart hinting that he is going to follow Anitas "Only the IL Supreme Court has authority" mentality...going to be a fun year for lawsuits.

I heard some of it. It sounded like Dan (I think) was really starting to grill him on it. But of course, they usually only have a few minutes with someone.

I think as much of Tom Dart as I do Gary McCarthy.

I think as less about Tom and Gary as I do with what is stuck to the bottom of my boots.

Yeah I heard it he said a lot of interesting things. They were trying to grill him a bit and pin him down on things but he answered like a true politician. They were like we think your law is going to be too restrictive and he said oh so you think its a good idea to allow people in bars with guns type of thing. They really never got down to the brass tacks of things. He did admit that in certain areas where there arent enough police officers that those people should be allowed to carry. He said some things surprisingly pro gun like how the foid system is terrible. He also basically said that he was completely against guns before the supreme court started ruling for them and now he will abide by their rulings.

Dart is just a straw man, a mouth piece for the Cook County "Machine". Nothing more, nothing less. Maybe he let slip some of his personal feelings but you mine as well be dealing directly with Rham or Madigan when the rubber hits the road.

I heard probably the last half of the interview this morning. Dart was dodging questions, although he basically admitted that he felt 2A was a group right until SCOTUS said otherwise. His position seemed to be that he supported the strongest restrictions legally allowed but would choke down gun rights if he were forced to by court precedent. Chicago Lite: "we'll pass laws that probably won't pass constitutional muster but we'll compromise by giving up if we get extremely clear directions from the court instead of fighting you to the mat on principle!" How generous.

Did anyone else feel like he sounded scared? The impression I kept getting was that he sounded like he knew he was losing but wanted to try to spin something positive out of it. I wonder if we might be able to make a create by tossing a few of the Machine pols something they can use to save face. Obviously I'm not suggesting a compromise, but maybe theres something insignificant (some preamble language about gun violence, maybe waived fees for low income folks, unfunded police sensitivity training, something like that) we can use so they can feel like they didn't get beaten. As much as I'd like to see the Machine feast on ashes and drink tears, if we can make this happen by letting a few of them feel like they accomplished something I think it would be a worthy effort.

I sent a couple of emails to Dart about his nutty plan and he actually replied. Tried justifying his position as being a common sense compromise, keeping in mind the unique challenges of Chicago. I retorted that if he's truly the squeeky clean corruption fighter he claims, there is no way he can in good faith push legislation that politicians will immediately turn into Croney Carry. He didn't answer that one. Wonder why. Imho, just another grandstanding POP.
