junglebob Posted August 12, 2012 at 12:54 PM Posted August 12, 2012 at 12:54 PM If it can be done Illinois governors will do it before leaving office. I think Blago would have done it if he could.
Lou Posted August 12, 2012 at 01:11 PM Posted August 12, 2012 at 01:11 PM All past convictions have been for federal charges. IANAL but I don't think they have the power to pardon for federal crimes.

If it were a choide, Blago would've certainly done it. He'd have the pardon pre-printed up, and just read it to himself once the jury said "Guilty".

Yep. If it were a choide, Blago would've certainly done it.He'd have the pardon pre-printed up, and just read it to himself once the jury said "Guilty". Couldn't happen. Blago was no longer Governor by the time he was convicted. Same for all the other Governors convicted of mis-deeds in Illinois. So I think the answer to the original question is... No, a governor cannot pardon himself.

Correct. State governors cannot pardon federal crimes, only state crimes. Blago is now a resident of FCI-Thornton in Colorado.
Lake Shore Drive Posted August 16, 2012 at 09:53 PM Posted August 16, 2012 at 09:53 PM Guys, just so you know, the OP misunderstood what was going in another thread... http://illinoiscarry...showtopic=29295 In the other thread, the OP (borgranta) misunderstood and thought a governor had pardoned himself (governor). So the OP created this thread (the one you're reading now) to ask if a governor can pardon himself, but I had already clarified for the OP (borgranta) what really happened in the other thread. No need to bump this thread again.
