Spotting Scopes

In regards to spotting scopes, consider how much you plan to spend. If you're looking to be able to see small holes at long ranges, a cheap 20x60 scope probably won't do it for you, and as the lenses get bigger, so goes the price. That said, at 100 yds, my $70 Celelstron 20-60x60 spotting scope views .22 holes just as crisp as my friends $350 scope.

If this is something you're going to be betting your life on or using for competition shooting, then by all means spend the money for high quality. If it's a piece of glass you're going to be using to call shots for sighting in or rough field work, cheaper works just as well, and it won't break your wallet if an accident happens and the scope gets destroyed. As a side note, I've found my cheap scope handles rough treatment pretty well, and it came with a case and table tripod at that price , though I needed neither since mine's mounted inside my pistol case.

For 300 its probably going to run ~$1000+, and during hot days you'll likely have problems with mirage with the power required.

If you come up dry on specific suggestions here, sniper's hide has a decent forum for long range. They also have a nice exchange there where you can find group buys and the occasional deal on optics.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I was not wanting to spend much over $300 maybe that is not realistic for what i was hoping it would do. I mostly shoot .30 caliber or larger at 300 right now but thought it would be nice to have the capability to see .22 holes at that distance.

+1 for the hide. Lots of good info over there. Also, watch the for sale section and you can get a deal on a good used spotting scopes as well as many many other things :frantics: Finding the hide has been very dangerous to the wallet...... Have to keep that thing under lock and key now!

What power is the scope? I've got an inexpensive 15 power and it can be difficult to see the golf tees used to mark shots at 200 yards. The high power guys I talked with said 20 power at 200 yards is best. I don't know what they use at 300 or 600.

As in most things in life you get what you pay for. I have bought many cheap spotting scopes for our junior club. I bought six last year that were not worth the shipping. We have had some that were not bad clearity, but the lens would come unglued internally. I have an older C-Star scope ($150.00) that works well, but I don't dare get it caught in the rain (a friend did).

The Celestron has a good reputation. You can check out the models shooters use - Champions Choice, Champion Shooter Supply or Creedmore Sports.

You can't go wrong with a Kowa.

I just pulled up the link to Amazon. It does not have a rotating mounting ring. This is a disadvantage when using a scope stand in position shooting. You can get a swivel mounting bracket for the scope stand, but that is more money and weight.

Ahh. I was wondering what was going on when you were talking .22 and 300 yards in the same conversation. I had nothing to add to the scope conversation and so I was waiting for someone to ask what you were shooting.....

I thought maybe you had left the '3' off the end of .223 and not caught it.

22LR will need somewhere ~40 MOA to compensate for drop at 300 (depending on rifle/ammo/conditions).

For me, it'd be more practical to use precision mortars at those angles - they make bigger holes too...

...people do it though.

Guess I assumed too much - I figured he meant a hole made by any 223/224 projectile.

Yes this is what I meant. I shoot my AR at 300 at a steel target. So I don't really need the spotting scope for that. But I have always thought about getting a 22-250 for coyote hunting.
