Ok folks, looking for a little help......

I recently received a mailer from my new State Rep - Marcus Evans Jr, 33 - stating how he supports HB 5831 requiring statewide registration......

I want to craft a letter to him and need a few talking points......

His claim is that this bill will allow law enforcement to "easily track guns used"...........As far as I understand the searches through the ATF are pretty reliable to the last point of sale (with a 4473 and/or the 10 year documentation required by the FOID statute)

Furthermore, I understand that the SCOTUS has ruled that a felon is not responsible to register a weapon they possess as it is in violation of their 5th amendment right in regards to self incrimination....

Personally, I am a believer that registration leads to confiscation......

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.....

Also an FYI for the member who created the log in another post his contact info is Chicago Office - 773-783-8492......Springfield - 217-782-8272 ........no e-mail address listed.....

Current combination of federal and state laws already require a paper trail.  Any further laws would be redundant and still suffer from the same fatal flaw.  The flaw being that everyone will have to play by the rules which of course criminals don't.

Registration is the first step to confiscation.   Ask those in CA who registered their "assault weapons" what the next law was that passed.

No way!

I'd tell you exactly what to tell him and draft the message myself, but Molly would probably ban me for language.

Sure thing...here ya go:

Mr. Evans,

I'd be glad to support HB 5831 and vote you back into office if you can do the following:

1: Get every gang banger, criminal and felon in Chicago to register their weapons first.

2: Afford us the same rights Chicago Aldermen are allowed, i.e., the right to carry a weapon to protect ourselves.

3: Have the state of Illinois go 10 straight years without one of our politicians being investigated and/or charged with illegal activities.

4: Get our state reps to actually represent the majority of Illinois residents' wishes

5: Reduce crime to such a miniscule number that we don't feel the need to carry a gun, let alone own one.

When you can promise and deliver on the aforementioned wishes, I will not only stop using your mailers as kindling for my charcoal grill, but would be glad to support you in all of your future endeavors.

Sincerely,

Damnit! I thought "May issue" meant they just issued me my permit in the month of May!

I applaud your decision to write Rep. Marcus Evans Jr.

I just hope you don't expect him to change his mind - because he is more than just a supporter.....

....he's a co-sponsor of HB5831

With Todd's post about Sigma's situation, it sounds like we have mandatory registration already.

I'd be pointing this out to the next carpet-bagging, poll - taxing representative that says we have to foot the bill on setting up another registration system.

If that's true, then Chicago didn't get the memo.

Oh wait... Chicago is a different nation. Sorry, disregard my post.

The only reason he wants registration is so next year he can pass a total ban and the ISP will know where all the (legal) guns are so they can confiscate them.  Let them pass their registration bill, I'm not registering anything.

on a not so aside, aside: remember when the state originally passed the seat belt law? there was a SPECIFIC provision IN THE LAW that said "no violation of this section shall allow a police officer to stop a vehicle" or something like that.   then the very next year, the repealed that section.  if they can, they WILL!!

Sometimes I think the most effective letters are short and simple ...

"Rep. Evans:
It is my understanding that you currently support statewide firearm registration.  As your constituent, I feel obligated that I do NOT support such registration.  Until you withdraw your support for such registration, I will vote against you, and will do my best to convince my fellow constituents to vote against you.

Sincerely,
Your Name."

If he wants to understand details about registration and why you oppose it, let him ask.  IMO, you probably don't need to craft long, detailed treatises using references to studies, etc. to support your position and try to convince him.  For the most part, elected officials don't give a damn about facts.  They are politicians and are engaged in a game.  They wish to advance themselves in politics.  Never forget that for the most part, politicians are playing a game, and fact-based issues are not central to that game.

One of the best descriptions of the majority politicians I believe I've ever read. And yes, there are a few exceptions that do honestly try to serve their constituents as best they can.
