An intercom system and a video camera outside his door might have helped more, to communicate with people at the door without actually opening the door. I guess conceivably, a gun could have helped if he answers the door with a gun at the ready in one hand...

As for whether or not a gun would have helped him... Guess we will never know. The video damn near put me into tears.
