Lou Posted July 1, 2012 at 11:32 PM Posted July 1, 2012 at 11:32 PM Mr. Hartman is a nationally followed columnist. http://www.thomhartmann.com/forum/2012/06/why-im-getting-concealed-carry-permitAm I a gun nut? Am I paranoid? Nope. Everybody who knows me knows I'm pretty level headed. So why do I want to carry my pistol? I don't necessarily want to carry it, but I want to be able to carry it.I don't shoot often. Maybe two or three times per year. But I enjoy it. I like the noise, the kick, the smell, the action, watching brass fly and the challenge. It's fun! Does that mean that I want to shoot someone? heck no. I don't even want to shoot a rabbit. But I love to shoot things. Especially things that don't die. I like darts too, but I don't really want to stick somebody with a dart either. Then why do I want to carry? My state allows it but I'm pretty sure he feds don't like it. That appeals to me. Every year the feds want more of my life to control. They want to regulate me more, make more decisions for me, tell me what to eat, punish me more for behavior that they don't approve of. And soon decide what medical procedure I can have and what doctor I can see. Well they do a million things that I don't approve of and I have no recourse. So I will exploit the one freedom that I'm pretty sure they don't appreciate. So why do I want to carry my pistol? It's simple. Because I can.

Patriots & Tyrants Posted July 2, 2012 at 12:48 AM Posted July 2, 2012 at 12:48 AM I have decided not to wait for cc in Illinois and to get my Utah permit. I am out of the state in a place where I could carry maybe 12 or so times a year but after an incident about 2 weeks my mind is made up.

I am out of the state in a place where I could carry maybe 12 or so times a year but after an incident about 2 weeks my mind is made up. How long did it take? I think I am about to jump into the same boat. I may wind up moving to a different location in Illinois here in the relatively near future depending upon the outcome on July 11th, but I still travel over to Iowa multiple times a year to see family, help on the farm, shop, and get gas while over that way. After watching the papers and news over in Scott and Clinton counties in Iowa...I'm thinking it a worthy investment to help ensure the safety of my family while we are over there. Folks with unsavory intentions have been popping up all over the place these days.
kurt555gs Posted July 2, 2012 at 02:33 AM Posted July 2, 2012 at 02:33 AM I like Thom Hartmann. I used to listen to his radio show all the time. His explanation is the closest I have ever heard to why I want concealed carry. One of the best explanations I can think of.

Most courses run both states at once and are readily available. Just call your local gun range/shop and ask around. They usually offer to do finger print cards right there for a small fee and also your ID pictures. Then the whole packet is mailed off to the respective State you want to have a non resident CCW in. I got my Florida CCW back within 2-3 weeks and Utah was 5-6 weeks after I mailed the packets away. So by the time you schedule your course and do all the required paperwork and mail it in your probably 1-2 months before you get issued your permit.

Patriots & Tyrants Posted July 2, 2012 at 03:50 AM Posted July 2, 2012 at 03:50 AM I have decided not to wait for cc in Illinois and to get my Utah permit. I am out of the state in a place where I could carry maybe 12 or so times a year but after an incident about 2 weeks my mind is made up. What was the incident that made your mind up? I stopped in at a 7/11 after a night of watching UFC with some friends. There was a drugged up looking guy inside loitering around. He was doing something in one corner of the store at one point but shielding whatever it was with his body. I got a very bad vibe. Then when I was filling my drink at the Soda fountain he started to get closer to me, taking care to try and stay out of my line of sight. I turned around and made eye contact. Being that I am 6'7 so combine that with the look I gave him whatever misdeed had been on his mind quickly wasnt and he walked off. Reflecting on the whole icident I realized I didnt have a gun , didnt even have my sog knife. Had he been armed and looking for a confrontation it would have been a battle. That is the second time in my adult life I wish I had been armed outside the home.
ckmorley Posted July 3, 2012 at 01:57 PM Posted July 3, 2012 at 01:57 PM I carry here in WI because I can. It's a freedom thing. I've been involved in a few attempted muggings in Chgo, so personal safety is a big deal to me. On a realistic level, I know my chances of being mugged up here are quite slim compared to Obama's Hometown, but I still like to be prepared. ckmorley
RECarry Posted July 3, 2012 at 02:29 PM Posted July 3, 2012 at 02:29 PM Why would I need a cc permit? Am I gun nut? Yes, I like the hardware and observing the legacy of my dad and grandpa who were marksmen and hunters. Am I paranoid? No. But I've mentioned before that real estate brings me into vacant homes. Real estate agents have been targets of crime (mostly women), sometimes in nice suburbs. Homeowners being harassed by their bank may feel like lashing out. I have unlocked front doors only to find the back door had been broken into. I once entered a home where the patios doors were left open by someone and multiple racoons had been raiding the home to drink from the faucets. The possibility of confrontation is real, and the cops would not arrive in time. I would not be calling from a house phone that ID's my location, since vacant homes have no phones (and sometimes no electric lights). Then there is the unexpected. One of my destinations was near a depressed neighborhood. I found myself having severe gastro distress. The closest QuikMart joint with a bathroom was a gathering place for a dozen hoodlums. I'm a white guy who is no match for thugs who visit the community boxing ring (or Rev.Wright's Church of Hate Whitey). What's my recourse?
stm Posted July 3, 2012 at 02:42 PM Posted July 3, 2012 at 02:42 PM For me, it's like a fire extinguisher or seat belts. It's a safety issue. I don't plan on a fire or car accident, but those are reasonable precautions. I don't plan on being attacked or needing to defend my family, but I will be prepared. I try to eliminate fire hazards in my home, and I drive safely. But I can't prevent everything, and that doesn't mean I will never need a fire extinguisher or seat belts. Similarly, I try to be aware of my surroundings and avoid unnecessary risks. But that doesn't mean that I will never need a defensive firearm.
Jim Smyth Posted July 3, 2012 at 02:43 PM Posted July 3, 2012 at 02:43 PM There's an old saying that goes like this.................................. "Why do I carry a gun.............Because a Policeman is too Heavy" Police cant be everywhere and sometimes they are a good distance/time away when called. Its better to be prepared than become a victim IMO!

Mr. Hartman nailed it for me, except that first, I enjoy pheasant hunting and, secondly that I DO want to carry my pistol, because I like that feeling of being prepared/protected/secure and because in many states, which I travel frequently, I CAN! I agree with every other point he makes when comparing to why I sought my permits. I avoid putting myself in compromising positions wherever possible, but being cautious doesn't always guarantee safety. I'm not the type to be aggressive, but if I was confronted by someone aggressive, I would be physically disadvantaged. Having a permit levels the field and elicits personal responsibility. I respect the trust and responsibility provided to me by most of the states I visit or go home to. I am not a native of Illinois, but am raising a family here. I respectfully request that the State of Illinois provide me with the same respect currently granted to me outside it's borders and the rights provided to me by our founding fathers and the Bill of Rights. Good luck, right! ...Damn communist state.

vess1 Posted July 5, 2012 at 06:10 PM Posted July 5, 2012 at 06:10 PM I just sent off for my Utah permit as well. It seemed to be about the best one to get for me. 30 states. The Florida permit only gains you a few more states including Florida, and KS. I get over to Iowa quite often and WI once in a while. Sent from my Motorola Electrify using Tapatalk 2
Beardown Posted July 18, 2012 at 01:53 AM Posted July 18, 2012 at 01:53 AM Like someone said above, I want CCW purely for safety. We are on this Earth for such a tiny amount of time I want to ensure that I live as long as I possibly can. While there are many things that I can't control, I want to be ready for any situation where my actions can play a deciding role. I will not be one of those people who, when a gunman enters a building, cowers under their desk hoping they don't get shot.

Craigcelia Posted July 18, 2012 at 05:50 PM Posted July 18, 2012 at 05:50 PM It's also about showing the State of Illinois that many of it's residents are getting other state permits. Look at all that lost revenue they could be bringing in themselves! BTW, Utah is about 60-65 days currently in getting your permit.
mrpapageorgio Posted July 18, 2012 at 09:15 PM Posted July 18, 2012 at 09:15 PM BTW, Utah is about 60-65 days currently in getting your permit. I got mine in roughly 45 days. My check was cashed on the 24th of May and I got the permit on about the 8th of July

GarandFan Posted July 18, 2012 at 11:02 PM Posted July 18, 2012 at 11:02 PM Why I got a concealed carry permit: Because current law criminalizes the bearing of arms without one. I'd be much happier without such a requirement.

People absolutely need to take their security personally. There isnt going to be somebody there to take care of you as we just witnessed. The govt cant save you. If somebody doesnt want to take it personally then they are accepting the idea of being a victim. Sent from my Motorola Electrify using Tapatalk 2
