I carried this way for about 10 years, and it saved my bacon a few times. But after 10 years fate caught up with me and I got nailed. But, the charges were dropped, by a liberal judge in the heart of Chicago none the less. Container Carry is perfectly legal, but the coppers have been taught an "arrest them all and let the Judge deal with it" mentality.
