sirflyguy Posted June 1, 2012 at 07:32 PM Posted June 1, 2012 at 07:32 PM I just submitted my course report for my first ever NRA Basic Pistol Class as an instructor! We had a ball. I had eight students: my daighter and son-in-law, and 3 couples from the church I work at. I did this one for only the cost of the Basic Pistol Student Pack so that I could get some experience. I had to do it over a few weeks due to folks' schedules, and I had to split the range portion in to two different days as well because of me being the only one watching the line. Everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves, and even the shooters that have been around awhile (they took it to be with their wives) told me they learned things as well. The NRA really organizes it very well with the Powerpoint presentation. It really keeps things on track and moving. Best thing/moment for me? It was when the lady who had never shot a pistol in her whole life (and was quite scared of it) went from missing the paper at 5-7 yds at the beginning to making decent groups by the end of the session. All in all, just a great experience!
pyre400 Posted June 1, 2012 at 07:42 PM Posted June 1, 2012 at 07:42 PM Fantastic story, thanks for sharing it. Its good introducing new/future gun owners to safe/responsible practices. Well done!
AFigmentOfYourImagination Posted June 1, 2012 at 11:13 PM Posted June 1, 2012 at 11:13 PM Congratulations on breaking the ice. Sounds like each person had a great time and learned something while they were at it. It is great to see somebody go from fearing a useful tool to discovering how to properly handle and utilize it. Again, awesome job, and good on you for teaching folks how to safely utilize a useful tool.
jon Posted June 1, 2012 at 11:41 PM Posted June 1, 2012 at 11:41 PM Great! It is really great when you see that smile, for the first good time at the range, comes out. I have a class tomorrow with a lead female instructor that was in my class a long time ago. Nice getting people involved Sirflyguy!
Frank Posted June 2, 2012 at 05:54 PM Posted June 2, 2012 at 05:54 PM I just took the Basic Pistol Instructor Course about a month ago, and I'm waiting to get my creds in the mail. How long did the NRA take to send yours out? For my first class, I was thinking of doing almost exactly what you did: friends and family, and charge just enough to cover my costs. I'm glad it worked out so well for you. I hope I have as much success. Great Job! -- Frank
Drylok Posted June 2, 2012 at 07:07 PM Posted June 2, 2012 at 07:07 PM very well done. Welcome to the instructor world. I hope you learned as much as an instructor as the others did as students. That's been my experience so far.
Drylok Posted June 2, 2012 at 07:08 PM Posted June 2, 2012 at 07:08 PM Hey Frank, I completed the course in late March last year and got my credentials about the first of May I believe.
ming Posted June 3, 2012 at 09:20 PM Posted June 3, 2012 at 09:20 PM Hey Frank, I completed the course in late March last year and got my credentials about the first of May I believe. The NRA estimate is 4-6 weeks after they receive your materials, Your instructor has 10 days to submit the material to NRA, so Drylok's time frame is right there.

I'll be (im)patiently waiting for the mailman to deliver it. My wife is already wrangling up one or two of her co-workers to be guinea pigs. -- Frank
4thestars Posted June 7, 2012 at 04:27 PM Posted June 7, 2012 at 04:27 PM Took my pistol instructor course in late March of this year. Still haven't received mine, but I figure they must be running behind because of all the classes held at the convention.
