I just purchased my first AR15 platform - actually an Mk12.

I signed up for a precision rifle class later this summer, but I've never shot or even handled an AR before.  I don't want to be a complete newbie in the class, so I need some formal or informal training on the basics of AR15 operation and maintenance.

Does such a thing exist anywhere within a reasonable distance of Chicago?

what's a reasonable distance? I can help you for free but the range (Sandy Ford Sportsman Club) I use is is 10 miles south of Ottawa off I-80.

There is a guy up at Bristol Ranges (O'Malley) who teaches a very basic AR operator course.  Alternatively, you can just go out to a range and learn how to use the damned thing!  Spending time on AR15 dot com you can learn a lot about maintenance.  Often in these cases, experience is the best teacher.

Sorry to sorta high jack but doesn't that range only allow single load? I'm actually looking for a new place to shoot/train too since Ottawa range closed. I'm almost close to Maxon shooting range in desplaines

Yes, they used to.  One of my complaints about that range has been what some consider its "over-regulation."  Yet it's a big range, with lots of stations, lots of people, so the "regulation" camp certainly has good points.

I think now they allow loading of 5 or 10 rounds at a time, but want you to fire them relatively slowly.  Its not like you can go up there and bump-fire lots of magazines.  That's OK with me.  It's their range, after all.  You wanna bump-fire or run full-auto stuff, you will have to find a range other than Bristol.

We got real lucky after Ottawa closed down. A good man with lots of land who lives by a buddy of mine's parents house has allowed us free reign to go out and play as often as we'd like. Berms already built thanks to his kids who ride motocross and no residents within range of the average rifle. Even some of the local Will County officers have expressed an interest to come out and shoot with us. I've only been back in Illinois about a year (was in Florida for the last 7 or 8), but most of the cops I've talked to are very pro 2A, which is nice.

Thanks Bud.  I think Sandy Ford is a little farther than i was hoping for.  Hopefully I can find something closer, but I appreciate the generous offer of your time!

I'm not sure if you're referring to Buffalo, but I believe they are reopening today, with all but the plinking pit back in operation.

yeah but the plinking pit is the only real reason to make it a trip down there. I'm all for supporting them but it's very far from my home so I don't think I can make it out there for something I can do closer to me. Times are tough
