I certainly clean metal parts in mineral spirits ... but definitely not wooden parts.  For one, the mineral spirits may alter or destroy the finish on the wood.

I have used the warming method for wooden stocks to great effect.  I've also used "stock in black trash bag out in the sun for a while" method, too.

Anyone who has used mineral spirits extensively on wood will attest to them being safe.  I've cleaned several surplus guns this way with no issues after getting the idea from an ond-timer who was a gun nut.

Good.  It doesn't have to be overly warm ... that black bag in the sun will do the job.  You can increase the heat by putting the bagged stock on the dashboard of a closed vehicle, facing the sun.  Get that stock warm enough and the cosmo basically turns into oil, which can be wiped off with paper towels or cotton rags.

Rott, would you be willing to post a picture of the top of the receiver?

I will post a pic later today after I get some other things done.  It appears to be an Ishevsk (sp?) variant....give me a few hours and you'll have the pic.

What the heck...here it is.  I know it is nothing unique, but hopefully this doesn't tell you I have a completely worthless piece of crap... :)

Don't forget to check for correct firing pin protrusion with the tool with the 3 slots. There are plenty YouTube videos showing how to check this and if necessary adjust.

Then go shoot it comrade. It's a great rifle to have and a hoot to shoot, just be careful with the bayonet.

It will most likely shoot high and to the side, all four of mine did.  They were probably sighted in with the bayonet attached, the Russian way.   Jim.

Well Rott ... I want to thank you for inadvertently helping me resolve a problem.  That I didn't have a regular round-receiver M91/30 was nagging on me, so today I was at Dunham's Sporting goods and lo and behold, their MNs were on sale for $99, so $105 out the door.  There were about 12 of them behind the counter, so I picked out a nice 1939 Tula.  It's in great shape, all the parts match in number.  It's a re-arsenal, and the bore is excellent (although not perfectly mirror).  Came with all the accessories, plus an extra cartridge carrier.  It's an Rguns import.  I've got her all cleaned up already!

I've never bought a gun at Dunhams.  It seemed weird.  They would not let me pull the bolt (not allowed to handle a gun without a trigger lock, and can't remove the bolt with trigger lock in place).  Moreover, after buying it, the guy had to walk with me until we were outside, then handed it to me.  He was nice though.  I kind of kidded with him, saying "it's strange ... I walk in here carrying a loaded firearm, and the store won't let me walk out with an unloaded one!"  He kind of laughed and said "yeah, we get that a lot, but it's store policy."  Oh, and also they ran a NICS check on me, even though KY carry licenses exempt them from that.  I haven't had a "point of sale" NICSs check in about 3 years.  Again "store policy."  Ah well ... it's a nice Mosin.

GF,

I'm glad I could help you out!  Looks like you got a pretty sweet deal!  Maybe I should have been a little more patient, and tried to find one locally so i could inspect first, but I'm overall pleased.

I do think I may try and add a hex receiver someday though...:)
