I have to travel through Illinois this coming week and want to keep it legal. I have carry reciprocity on the rest of my trip, but obviously not IL. When I pass though IL do I have to unload the magazines. I understand I need to separate the firearm and the ammo and lock the firearm up.  But do I need to unload the mags?

Thanks

If you are traveling thru Chicago or Cook County it is best to follow the federal rules about passing thru.

Outside of Cook County you are reasonably safe if you follow the state laws on them. Unloaded firearms and in a gun case of some sort. The law does not require the magazines be unloaded. You can play games with just what is and what is not allowed, but it is best to be safe and not screw around unless you want to be a test case.

This makes me wonder, If I was going from Will County, and had to pass through a part of cook county, do I have safe passage of any weapons with 10+ capacity that are "banned" in cook if I am just passing by?

(no mean to hijack)

You don't have to lock up the firearm.  Basically, just have it unloaded (chamber empty, mag well empty) and enclosed in a case.  You can have loaded mags in the case with it if you want.

I live in NE Ohio, and am traveling to a suburb of St Louis, MO it would be a very long scenic route. I am only going to be in MO for half a day. I don't want to miss too much work either so I plan to take the straight path.

I plan to lock the unloaded firearms and the loaded mags up in two separate locked containers to be safe. I don't mind taking the extra steps to lock them up separate, and exceeding the law so I don't become a test case. I simply wanted to make sure I didn't need to unload the mags. I didn't believe I did, but I don't need a felony charge while traveling to testify in a felony firearms case. I like my freedom.

Thank you all for the replies.

Sorry for the unhelpful reply crb, I was just trying to add some humor. Budman5's link should provide all the answers you need. Good luck!

Talking about unloading magazines, I believe in Ohio having a round in your vehicle with a firearm makes it loaded.  Probably not if the firearm and ammo are locked up.  Crb is that correct?

Illinoisans always remember "unloaded in Illinois" may not be "unloaded" in another state.

South of I64 or I70 Southern Illinois does tend to be more firearms friendly.  Recommend you still follow state law of course.

Remember the 1991 Luby Cafeteria Massacre of the Unarmed (Kileen, Texas before Texas Concealed Carry) Do we need 23 people to die in a similar incident before we're allowed effective self defense?

In Ohio a loaded magazine is considered a loaded firearm assuming you have the firearm in the car also. Now with a CHL we can have loaded mags except for rifles a shotguns. We have some screwy laws too, we are working diligently to correct them.
