Almost all of my C&R dealings have been with AIM Surplus, and they've consistently done right by me.

I don't know if this counts, but Brownells.com and MidwayUSA.com offer dealer discounts to anyone who has a C&R on file with them.  The savings definitely add up.

While we're about it,  I thought I heard/read that CMP is nice to deal with. Is it true that a C&R holder can basically drive up to their store and walk out with an '03 or a M1?  Or order with just the C&R and not have to do the range-fire? Where would I look to check that out,  specifically?

Heres a good write up on the Nagant revolver, and a much cheaper source of ammo should you choose to get one and shoot it regularly.

Oops--didn't see your post, Oc, until just now.  Anyway, Racer's link is definitely the mother lode for the kind of information you're seeking, and if it still leaves you with any specific questions, I think you'll find a lot of folks here ready with answers.

It varies--sometimes nothing at all (oddly enough, every once in a while--usually when something is on sale---the dealer price is slightly higher than the price the regular folks pay), sometimes maybe close to 15-20%.  On average, I would say the discount is somewhere between 5-10% (probably closer to the high end of that range).

OK - I now know I am officially paranoid!!

I got a big fat package from the ATF today and started to panic - looking over my shoulder.

What did I do?  Who's coming after me?   Did someone turn me in becasue of my "arsenal"?

When I opened it I realized it was my C&R application that I ordered and forgot about.

One question - what is with this sending the app to your local Chief of Police?  Anyone in Illinois have bad vibes about this?

I wouldn't worry about it. The chief doesn't have to approve or sign anything. All you have to do is be able to check the box on your application confirming you mailed the copy to your local chief constable. I've yet to hear of anyone not getting their permit on account of a chief intervening.

I suspect the sort of things a chief might try to use against someone are the same sort of things that would cause you to fail  the federal background check, and thus you'd be disqualified anyway.

Congratulations on starting your paperwork, by the way. What do you anticipate your first purchase will be?

Maybe a Makarov and/or an SKS?

I'd get the SKS while the getting is still good. They're outstanding rifles on their own merits, the price is still reasonable (~$200 for a 59/66), and they may or may not count as "assault weapons" (if you're the paranoid type).

MMWWHWHWHWHWHWHWHWHWW (evil laughter) yet another convert to the Milsurpitis!!!!!!!!

Congrats on joining the old side of the force....... Your police chief cant do anything with it, he cant stop you from getting your C&R. You just have to mail it to him..... 4-6 weeks from now you will get your liscense and spend more time than you thought possible skimming every site you know of, every day to see if something you dont have is on sale somewhere. Im speaking from experience here.

Speaking of C&R liscense, i should be getting my renewal notice sometime next month. Man has 3 years flown by... im hesitant to say here exactly how many i have bought in the last 2.5 years though......

I bought my CZ-50 last year when Century arms got 50 in from the shot show, then 2 weeks later i went to a gun show and found another cz-50 which i also bought. When i got it home, cleaned it up and got a really good look at it, i realized it was a cz-70 converted from a a cz-50. Since they were so similar in design they updated quite a few 50's to the 70.....

I'd get one, but I don't think it would be useful in Chicago.  It would just be to prove some kind of point and I'm not sure what that would be or accomplish.  I'm also worried about inviting the Feds further into my life.

I still remember the feeling when my first purchase got delivered and I thought how neat it was to have the gun come to me instead of having to go to a dealer to pick it up.  :flowers:

Yep. Just received my first C&R purchase. Now I get to spend all weekend tearing it apart and cleaning it up.

I have shot .32 S&W longs, and they seem to work all right, although the brass can bulge a little. However, you will end up with residue all over the inside and outside cylinder and forcing cone, just like with a normal revolver; if you shoot Nagant ammo,  the only place for residue to escape is out of the muzzle and over 99.9% of the residue is confined to the inside of barrel, which makes cleaning a lot easier, albeit fairly expensive at the current cost of Nagant cartridges.

Well,I have always been interested in .32 cal.,although I have never had a pistol to shoot any of it.I especially like pistols that shoot more than one kind of bullet/caliber so I thought that the Nagant would be perfect if it did indeed shoot more than one caliber. Thanks for the reply.

What is the going price of the Nagant revolver now?

Last time I checked they were just under $200, on average.
