Join Us in Chicago for a Congressional Field Hearing

On Thursday, August 19, you are invited to attend a very important Congressional Field Hearing to discuss our priority legislation, H.R. 2324, to close the gun show loophole. Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL) is hosting the event.

The gun show loophole allows people to buy guns at gun shows from unlicensed sellers without a criminal background check.

WHEN:
Thursday, August 19, 2010
9:30 AM

WHERE:
Dirksen Federal Building
219 S. Dearborn Street
Room 2510
Chicago, IL 60604

This hearing is open to the public.
We hope you can join us Thursday!

Sincerely,
Paul Helmke, President
BCPGV

The term "gun show loophole" has gained credibility by it's repeated use by the antis. Just like the term "assualt weapon", by repeating something long enough - it gets accepted as truth by a gullible public.
"The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes,
but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda,
they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles."  — Jeff Cooper, The Art of the Rifle

Funny how they always schedule this stuff in the middle of a weekday so people that actually WORK for a living won't be there.
But I am sure they will pack the room with people that don't have anything better to do.

So can anyone make it?

Awesome! Please tell your wife thanks, on behalf of those of us who could not make it.

Thanks on the behalf of all of us otherwise I would have to call off work. Someone has to be there.

If the buyer has a valid FOID card they supposedly went through a criminal background check.  I'd rather they would concentrate their energy on closing the "armed criminal action loophole" that allows people to walk into a 7-11 with a loaded firearm and demand money from the cashier.
It's a wonderful day in the hood...

Todd was able to make the meeting and has an interesting report of what went down.
I'll let him fill in the details.

Anyone else from IllinoisCarry make it to the hearing?

Unfortunately my wife had a prior commitment that she had forgotten about when she said she'd go to the hearing, so she was unable to go.

Some news starting to pick this up ...

http://www.wbez.org/...x?audioID=43910

Thirty-three states, including Indiana, allow private dealers to sell guns to anyone without a background check.

Gotta love the way that put that one ... yeah, I am sure thirty-three states allow us to violate federal laws with selling guns to felons, etc.

I'm interested to hear some details. All I heard today was a report on WBBM 780 and that report was completely one sided.

I made the hearing, took some time off of work to do so.

I was the only NRA member in the room, not counting staff there were about 12 people in attendance.

After the Dog and pony show, Congressman Connyers (sP) tried to get me to tesitfy. I jhad said I was there as a private citizen, and when he tried to sand bag me at the end, I walked up, told him I would talk to him as I had said in the hall or afterwards I simple there to watch and learn about the legislation. He persisted when I went to leave the front of the room.

After some badgering about wantign to "open" a diologue, and wnatign me to sit down, I repeated that I nothing to say on the record and was declining his offer to speak. As he kept badgering me, I turned around and walked out the room. I heard him saying wait , wait....

I'm not sure the Chairman of the Jud Committee is ues to not getting his way and having someone tell them no, then turn their back on them a walk out.

more to follow this is just a quick update.....

John Conyers from Michigan?  Powerful guy!

So this was a bonafide congressional hearing ... and was being held in Chicago?  I guess I had not realized that congressional hearings were held outside Washington.

Todd, does Conyers know you?  He called you out by name?  If so, you're on the radar of the US congress ... not just the IL legislature!

Mr. Todd, were you concerned that if you had given testimony, it would have been construed that you were speaking as an NRA lobbyist, and not just as Todd Q. Citizen?

Bill --  yes. I work for the state and local side of nra/ila. I don't work for the federal side

Anyhthing I say would be attached to nra lobbyist. No matter how many times I said I wasn't there to represent. the nra and based upon what I saw and experianced my gut was right

They got my name because I got fingered by is a raqbid anti/nut he sits on hci/brady board and ichv board. One of the other ichv guys tagged me as a nra rep so some there were not going to let that go and whatever was said would get spread around that an nra lobbyist said x y or z

More later I'm in springfield for a meeting

Glad you didn't become a part of their game!

Whewwww, I'm glad I didn't make it, wearing my SAFR host hat... they would have eaten me alive, and spit out the pieces - to the everlasting damage to the cause.

It takes a lot of intestinal fortitude to turn and walk away! That had to be tough. Thank you!

There wasn't a question or person on that panel I feared. But other had weeks to prepare and it was all staged.

I wasn't gonna play that game. I was more than willing to have a cup of coffee and a conversation, but he didn't want that. There were a lot of things running through my mind since at the opeing he threatened to subpoena NRA and ISRA leadership if they refused to particpate.

Yea the voince in my head was going you want me to talk infront of you, subeona me -- I dare you. And while he was trying to get me to play his game it entered my noggin that hey, you work for me not the other way around. Good thing my mouth didn't work as fast as my brain was a spinn' and my legs moved faster.

There are a lot of things I would have liked to get into. How they didn't touch on what the bill does, or how it's never enough or they just don't get the fact that they have lost, and it's a matter of time before their dying movement takes it's last breath.

But I did the right thing as much as I would have loved to tell them a thing or two in a way they might not have heard. Yes congressman, unlike you I actually read the bill and it does for the registration of every firearm sold in the United States with the Department of Justice and undoes a 40 year ban on the government kepping such a reigstration list....What's that why is that a bad thing? We'll we don't trust you. Why? becuase you have a tendency to lie about guns and to gun owners. How do I know that? Your lips are moving.

I'm sure I may get another bite at the apple. But either way, we saw them tip their hand a bit for next year. Expect Chicago to come after private records on sales.

Yes, they are supposed to work for us, and it appears that a great many people in the U.S. have no clue as to that very statement.

Again, glad to see that you weren't about to play their game.
