How strict are they about the training? Does it have to be from a Utah instructor? Where did you get yours?

It does have to be from an instructor certified by the Utah Department of Public Safety, but they have a listing of such folks in many states, including IL, and I notice that one of the certified Utah firearm instructors has a phone # with my area code, and would thus presumably be not too difficult to get to.  Here's a link to the out of state instructors.  This interests me, because a Utah CCW permit qualifies as a NICS alternative--which, if I understand correctly, would be a way around the 3 day wait to buy handguns.  Or does Illinois place its own delays into the process, over and above the Brady law requirements (sounds like something this state would do)?

Indeed it is something our state does. Even if the federal law ceased to exist, you'd still have to wait 1 day for long guns and 3 days for pistols. This, of course, is maddening when you consider the state law allows non-residents to purchase long guns here without any waiting period.

Hey folks,

My first post, and I just wanted to say hi.  Also, I picked up on Packing.org that there are several organizations that offer a Utah CCW via the internet.  Here's one site:

SafeArms.com

They provide an online instruction course, send you all of the necessary documentation, and all you need to do is either provide proof of firearms training, or a video tape displaying your ability to safely handle a handgun, per their instructions.

It sounds a lot like the Florida deal, except you aren't required to take a training class if you have experience with firearms (which I'm sure all of you do).  Anyway, I just thought I would chime in.

That is good info, but it looks as if they've just (in the last couple weeks) closed the "internet training loophole"   .

SafeArms.com Utah CCW page said:

The State of Utah just passed legislation during the first week of March, 2005 that included a late amendment prohibiting electronic-only delivery of the Utah CCW Course. Thus, we are no longer offering an online-only version of our course for the Utah CCW permit.

Students wanting the Utah CCW permit may attend our course in person at Safearms Academy, at one of our "on-the-road" classes, through one of our authorized instructors or at an Authorized Training Center. We continue to offer an online, pre-course study guide for many of our courses including the course leading to the Utah CCW permit but not in place of the classroom-based instruction. The online, pre-course study is in addition to the classroom-based instruction to help students prepare for the course and the entire course outline is covered in class.
Still handy information, though--thanks!

Good eye--I'd missed that somehow.  $99 is a bit rich for my blood, though.

I have info for the Utah permit but it does not contain the blue fingerprint card. How do I attain the card ? Recieved PA permit and just sent in for NH permit on 6/14.

Apparently the rules have changed again and you CAN do your UT training online if you meet certain criteria.

Interesting--if I read it right, you would still need  a basic NRA pistol course (as one possibility).  A whole lot easier to set up than a Utah certified course, obviously.  I'll have to keep that in mind.  Thanks, Ilphil---good eye.

That's how I read it too.
If we hadn't had that UT class up here last fall this would certainly have been a good alternative.

Adding Utah to my PA and NH would give me 30 states (counting Alaska and Vermont)--up from 22 currently--not planning trips to any of the other 8, but it would be nice just to be able to tell lawmakers that I can carry in 60% of the states.

I am sure there is interest. What are the particulars? I was thinking about the Utah permit next year but if is convenient and inexpensive I would push it up.

I'm not sure what anyone's definition of "inexpensive" is.

It's a 4-hour course, all classroom. If you want a one-on-one, when your schedule allows, it's $150, plus $10 for fingerprints if you need them.

If you can get two or more people together, we discuss a discount.

I can also travel to you, but there's obviously an expense with that, which might be waived if there were enough students.

I don't teach a simple basic NRA pistol class with this, I actually get into the meat of carrying a gun, avoiding a fight, levels of force, disengagement techniques, gunfighting and dealing with the aftermath. It's my goal that you leave with a huge amount to think about and rehearse.

Granted, we can only do so much in 4-hours, but I haven't had anyone ask for a refund yet.  :shooter:

GLOCK 21  .... I LIVE IN ROCKFORD, IL.    I WOULD BE INTERESTED IN GETTING A UTAH PERMIT... DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW STRICT THEY ARE? I WAS CONVICTED OF... DUI... 10 YEARS AGO WHEN I FIRST TURNED 21. I GOT PROBATION AND IT WAS REMOVED FROM MY RECORD 5 YEARS AGO...THE APPLICATION STATES THAT THEIR BACKGROUND CHECK WOULD SHOW THIS CONVICTION...I DON'T WANT TO WASTE THE MONEY APPLYING OR GETTING A FIREARMS CERTIFICATION IF I HAVE NO CHANCE OF ACTUALLY RECEIVING SAID PERMIT.
ANY ADVICE WOULD BE HELPFUL
THANKS

Email me your contact info.  Most of our students are interested in the FL permit but occasionally one will ask about the Utah permit.  Will send them your way.

It would depend on if you came to me or I had to drive to you.

Probably the best thing to do is to email me and we'll get it sorted out.

Florida requires LE, or such, to do your prints. Utah, as I've ever been able to get out of them, says anyone can do it...which could even be you, I suppose. I usually do it for my students and have had no problems yet.

In your case, since you need them both done, I'd have the local PD do both since you're making the trip for Florida anyway.

Remeber, Utah requires that you use their offical card.

The permit application doesn't say you need their official card, it says

"FINGERPRINT CARDS:
Blue Applicant fingerprint card can be obtained from B.C.I.
or your local police department. Fingerprint card must be
filled out completely."

Is their app incorrect?
