Great cop in Itasca!

Just thought I would let you guys know about an experience I had about 3 weeks ago in Itasca. Driving down old Rte 53 in a new company car that I just got about a week earlier. Vehicle is much more responsive than the one it replaced. Still getting used to the extra power. I passed a parked police cruiser only realizing it was there when it was too late. I looked at the speedometer and it read 9 over which means I was going faster than that when the reading was taken. Vehicle pulled out and drove up behind me at the light. I could tell she was running my plates and figured here we go! Sure enough, when the light turned green she turned on the lights so I pulled over to an apartment complex parking lot. She came up to the car and asked if I knew how fast I was going. I thought honesty would be the best policy so I said I know I was speeding but didn't know how fast. She then told me I was doing 57 in a 40! I was carrying my .45 at he time and figured I'd let her know I was carrying by presenting my CCL with the other necessary documents. She asked if I was carrying now. I said yes ma'am. She said she would be right back. I figured no way I'm getting a warning considering the circumstances. She came back to the car about 5 minutes later and asked where the gun's location was and asked what I was carrying. Smith and Wesson 4506-1 ma'am I replied. She says "Nice!". She says here's your warning, sir. Please slow down. Of course I thanked her profusely and she said have a nice day. Not sure if the fact I was carrying had any effect on the outcome but I'm thinking it did. The fact that I was open, honest, and cooperative seemed to help the situation. Great cop as well! Thanks Itasca PD!

I was in the left lane going West on Route 88, going about 85 mph and first one car and then another passed me, there was another car coming up behind me in the left lane, so I decided to get out of the left lane, but there were quite a few cars in the middle lane and there was also a semi in the middle lane. I didn't want to fall in behind the semi so I sped up to get in front of the truck, but the car that was coming up behind me in the left lane - going over 85 mph was a DuPage Sheriff. He had been doing a loop on 88 from Naperville Road / Freedom Drive to Route 59 and he wasn't on the highway when the two cars passed me going 90 - he totally missed that, but of course he caught me when I sped up to get in front of the truck.

Perhaps, the gun you were packing that impressed her, wasn't the Smith and Wesson,

A DCSO deputy pulled you over on I-88?

I drive 88 every day, I see it every so often. I’ve always assumed people got clocked near the on ramp and tried to casually bail onto 88. I think I remember seeing DuPage running speed on 88 itself.

That’s the reason I asked - I drive it every day, too.

You’ll see DCSO cars transiting on 88, but not patrolling. I used to occasionally professionally deal with ISP District 15 troopers, and at that time locals and county were not allowed to patrol the tollways. However, if they were pulling someone over for a violation that occurred before entering the tollway, that was fair game.

I wonder if something changed?

This guy was a DuPage County Sheriff, he came up behind me pretty quickly, he was hauling...

He actually seemed kind of bothered when I showed him my CCL. He kind of sneered and said "I don't need that..." He was snippy.

I didn't say anything, but I thought "Hey man I'm just showing it to you as a courtesy." He did ask me where my gun was - I old him I had 2 and where they were. He told me not to touch em, and then he came back and gave me a ticket. He also let me know that he could've taken me to jail. So he was doing me a favor by not taking me to jail.

I turn the inside lights on and keep my hands on top of the steering wheel when I'm being ticketed. I have to go another 8 months without getting a speeding ticket :o

Oh its pretty bad... to keep the ticket off my record I had to help reduce the debt in Illinois. But if I get another speeding ticket in 8 months, this last ticket automatically flips to a conviction, probably will not get supervision for a subsequent ticket so at the very least I'd be looking at very hefty premium increases for car insurance for the next 7 years. I believe worst case scenario could be a suspended license.

Now see, if it had been an Itasca cop that had pulled me over - everything would have been cool. :)

The county sheriff dept. can and will legally patrol anything within their county (including highways and tollways.) They usually don't bother with the tollways b/c they're already well-patrolled and it can create friction with the Illinois State Police; but they can do it if they'd like to. Even city cops can patrol the highway portion inside their city limits, but usually don't bother.

Interesting - I had a District 15 trooper tell me the opposite.
