Our Rights & Freedoms – A Perilous Legislative Session

Since our last alert several events have occurred that affect our rights.

As a result of a suit brought by Ladies of the Second Amendment, a group affiliated with IAPCAR, Puerto Rico has joined the ranks of shall issue carry states and territories. Visitors to the island will be happy to find that their concealed carry license from any state of the union will be honored.

Closer to home, the Illinois State Police has expanded the list of ‘substantially similar’ states adding Idaho and Nevada. Residents of six states may now apply for an Illinois non-resident CCL: Arkansas, Idaho, Mississippi, Nevada, Texas, Virginia.

In judicial action, the Illinois Supreme Court decided Johnson v Illinois State Police in favor of Ms. Johnson. The Court, in deciding this question of restoration of rights following a decades old misdemeanor conviction, found that the right to keep and bear arms is a civil right which can be restored through the IL FOID appeal process and doing so would not be contrary to federal law. This case could have long ranging effects on our rights in Illinois.

Yet, despite this positive news, all is not good in the State of Illinois.

While many celebrated the retirement of former Senate President John Cullerton, those in the know are more than wary of his successor, Senator Don Harmon. Senator Harmon was the Chief Senate Sponsor of SB337, the Firearm Dealer Licensing Act that continues to close so many Illinois gun stores. He is sure to carry his contempt for the Second Amendment right to the top of the Senate Chain of Command.

In developing news, information has surfaced highlighting the possibility that tax monies generated by cannabis sales could be used to fund anti-gun groups. IllinoisCarry is developing protocols to monitor and react to the situation as needed.

All is not lost, of course.

The dedication of the Ladies of the Second Amendment in Puerto Rico, the perseverance of Shawna Johnson in Wabash County Illinois, and countless other women and men who defend our rights should serve as inspiration to each and every one of us. The likes of Senate President Harmon, bringing to leadership his “more of the same” disrespect for the law abiding gun owners of this state, his divisive legislation pitting Northern Illinois against South, urban against rural, should serve as a catalyst for change in Illinois politics.

The 2020 Legislative Spring Session begins January 28. Join us at IllinoisCarry.com as we fight the good fight!
