SB 0016 Tactics

There are 59 members in the Senate right now.

Twenty are 'green'.

Six are 'yellow'.

We need to add four more to that total to kill this bill in the Senate. I suspect the main initiative from the other side is in the Senate this year (whereas last time 2414 was a House bill) because they have a better looking majority on paper in that chamber.

I believe it would be prudent to assume that every orange and pink member will vote against us. That leaves the eleven new members to decide the bill's fate:

Dan Kotowski (D-33) is sponsoring not only SB0016, but several other anti-gun bills.

John Millner (R-28) served in the House from 2003-2005 and was one pro-gun vote away from being classified as green. He is probably apt to help us.

Mike Frerichs (D-52) met with the GSL group a couple of months ago. My understanding of that meeting is that he at least claimed he would support gun owners and left a generally positive impression.

William Delgado (D-2) is another import from the House. He has a long, proud history of supporting anti gun bills in that chamber.

Randall Hultgren (R-48) also served as a Representative for 8 years. His 2005 voting record was nearly blemish free, and it's a safe bet he'll oppose an AWB.

Based upon what we know about these five, we can likely count on 2 -3 votes against SB0016.

In theory, that means that of the six remaining new members, we must convince 1 - 2 of them of the merits of our position. If all of the green and yellow Senators vote like they're supposed to, we win.

I propose that in addition to contacting your own Senator (which we should all be doing all the time regardless), everyone focus heavily on the new Senators (except the handful who are strongly established as being against us). It is probably best to begin by writing letters. If it appears a vote on SB0016 is imminent, then the time will come to deluge their offices with calls.

If you live in any of these districts and see your Senator listed above, then it is essential that in addition to a letter and a phone call, you arrange an appointment to speak with the individual in person at his or her office. Doing so will make a positive difference.

The activities I've outlined entail making 15 phone calls, writing a letter and signing it 15 times, and $5.85 in postage. If we aren't willing to do this, then we deserve whatever the Senate decides to inflict upon us.

Who's with me?

What about Sen Deanne Demuzio?

In a conversation I had with her a month or so ago, she sounded as though she supported us.

She talked about the Southern Illinois caucus, among other things.

I called her office yesterday, the office sec was out, did not return my call. I am trying again this A.M.

I noticed the committee vote was 8-2.

Any way to see who votes which way?

Not yet (if ever--I can't remember if they ever publish committee votes).

Made my calls. Maybe I should have done it earlier in the day (I did it just after 1:00)--maybe I would have gotten more live people, and less voice mail. As it happened, this is how it broke down:

Voice mail: 7

Staffer answered, but made no commitment either way about Senator's vote: 6*

Staffer answered, and said the Senator would definitely vote "No": 2

*Although Pankau's staffer didn't commit either way, she only let me get as far as "I'm calling to ask that Senator Pankau vote against . . . "

Her: "Senate Bill 16?"

Me: "That's the one--been getting a lot of calls against it?"

Her: "Yeah--that one isn't very popular."

Sounds as if some people are doing things right.

How 'bout the Miller case? The Supreme Court ruled firearms could not be banned if they have a military purpose. An AR-15 is a civilian version of the military's M-16.

Just something to think about. If this bill gets passed.

One would think that United States v. Miller would end the whole debate (and in our favor), but I guess the gamble of using a Second Amendment defense scares people.

Not much feedback from my senator. VERY noncommital from my rep.

I don't feel good about her.

Thank you for your recent communication regarding AWB Bills. I will certainly take your views into consideration when the issue is presented in the House.

Thanks for taking time to let me know your opinion. I invite your continued interest and input on matters that come before the Legislature.

...well if you notice, there has been a change in tactics since last session.

Playing cards are being held close to the chest, they don't want any leaks out till they got the ammo to plug them...it would seem they have the leaks plugged.

....crystal ball time....bill gets passed, only provision removed....registration!

With the election over, and two years to go till the next one no one is really worrying about how voting for the ban will impact them. The biggest majority have saw over the years that they are always voted back in office. So they don’t care what public opinion is on the matter.

Molly brought up a good logical reasoning for this in one of her posts.

It is the young grasshoppers to the political scene that can get nervous, but, they know that time is on their side and they can jump off the cliff with the old timers and it will be the old timers that will protect their ugly fat camel stinking arse’s in the election in 08.

...one other point that I have notice.. The racial make up of the co-sponsors!
