CHICAGO - Representative Danny Davis and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Chris Kennedy introduced legislation Sunday to increase taxes on guns and ammunition.

The politicians presented the tax at Mount Sinai Hospital on the West Side.

If enacted, the legislation would double the federal excise tax on guns and impose a 50 percent excise tax on ammunition. Currently, the excise tax on ammunition is 11 percent.

"If the individuals continue to use weapons and continue to use the bullets, the tax would direct money at least to gun violence prevention activity," Davis said.

Davis said the proposed law is a result of increased gun violence in Chicago and across the country.

..."The Gun Violence Prevention and Safe Communities Act would increase federal excise taxes on shells and cartridges from 11 percent to 50 percent. It also calls for an increase in taxes on the sale of pistols and revolvers from 10 percent to 20 percent.

Taxes on other firearms, including assault weapons, would rise from 11 percent to 20 percent under the legislation Davis said he plans to introduce Tuesday."...

Has anyone ever FOIA'ed documents pertaining to where the tax money actually went to? I stopped at Cabela's in Hoffman during Christmas and bought a bulk box of .22's. The cashier reminded me that I was paying something like 7 dollars towards Crook Co. tax. In the crunch that I was, I belied up. It just made me think/assume that money was going straight to some BS.

Everyone is just going to buy out of state anyway, just like we do with firearms and ammunition anyway.

Davis is a US Rep so this is Federal legislation.

Although IL Gov candidate Kennedy was in the story, the post may have been better in the National forum.

That's terrible. I guess there's going to be a spike in reloading? Unless the tax covers components too.

I wonder...It's like when the Cabela's folks ask me if I want to "round up for conservation". I thought part of the tax on ammo already went toward conservation?

None of the Crook County tax goes towards conservation. It goes to "treat victims of gun violence". That doesn't mean more money for that of course, it just means money from other sources can be diverted elsewhere.

The kids in the FL HS are victims of gun violence. Folks and People, in Chicago, are victims of their own game. Yes there are some that are innocent but not the majority. They should have to pay their own way.

I don't see this bill ever passing, let alone being signed by Pres Trump. Even an imbecile realizes that criminals in Chicago, are not buying their ammo legally, as they don't have a FOID card, ergo they are not paying taxes. This is meant to virtue signal and penalize law abiding gun owners. 50% tax on ammo. So penalizing sport, target and range shooters, will REALLY reduce crime. Yea, that makes sense.

The kids in the FL HS are victims of SCHOOL POLICY, GOVERNMENTAL AND LAW ENFORCEMENT INCOMPETANCE. Folks and People, in Chicago, are victims of their own game. Yes there are some that are innocent but not the majority. They should have to pay their own way.

FIFY

If that School District hadn't a policy to NOT arrest Minors for crimes, and the local LE didn't adhere to it, the shooter never gets a gun, and likely is actually spending time in jail before now. And, lets not even get into the 4 Deputies, that sat outside the building as the shooting went on.

I wasn't specifically talking about the cook count taxes. I mean't part of the taxes on ammo that are part of Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration and Dingell-Johnson Sport Fish Restoration programs. Also I don't buy my ammo in cook county so I plotz on their tax.

I hear ya. I anticipated a correction after posting. Too many breakdowns there that could have had a major impact on the tragic event.

It would be even more interesting if a FOIA could prove where what ever funds were collected, what amount of it was really spent on "victims of gun violence" or did it end up in a general use fund and get spent elsewhere?

As long as Cook County spends more on treating gunshot wounds than they collect in taxes then that's where it all goes. And they undoubtedly spend far more on gunshot wounds than they collect with this tax.
