Looking for Instructor Course

transplant

Recommended Posts

I enjoy sharing firearms experiences with others and helping first time shooters. Currently I am assisting another instructor (under his direct supervision) with teaching portions of his IL CCL classes.

I would like to take this to the next level and become a certified instructor myself.

I have three CCL permits and have taken several basic handgun defense classes and an RSO class.

Who has instructor training classes scheduled for this year (2017) that I can sign up for?

"Currently I am assisting another instructor (under his direct supervision) with teaching portions of his IL CCL classes."

The gentlemen were referring to this section.

A person who is not a certified firearms instructor shall not teach applicant training courses or advertise or otherwise represent courses they teach as qualifying their students to meet the requirements to receive a license under this Act. Each violation of this subsection is a business offense with a fine of at least $1,000 per violation.

Is he teaching a course or assisting an instructor? I present the Massad Ayoob movie in class, I also on occasion use an RSO to demonstrate a task. As I read the law as long as I am supervising these activities all is fine. Now if I let them watch the movie at home or let the RSO conduct unsupervised demonstrations Then I am in violation of the law.

How do you think the Illinois State Police reads the law?

Obviously i don`t think there is any problem or i wouldn`t be using instruction videos and live demonstrations from RSOs WHILE I TEACH.

The nitpicking on this web site gets a little old.

OP said HE was teaching portions of the class.

If he is TEACHING portions of the class, then you posted the answer yourself!

If HE is not a certified instructor he CAN NOT teach any part of the class.

Nothing in the rules I read or what was posted above says a certified instructor can supervise others who aren't certified to TEACH any portion of the class.

Nitpicking, not at all.

Just like the instructors sending their students to a range to shoot the quals all by themselves and then take the target back to the instructor for their cert. just plain stupid. And people wonder why others think the instructor program is bs!

OP, screw the naysayers, where are you located and how far are you willing to travel? If you are located in Southern Illinois the group Sirflyguy recommended would be an excellent choice.

If you enjoy teaching others, jump in and start with a NRA Basic Pistol Instructor Workshop. If you just want to teach the basics for beginners this may be the only NRA instructor course you will need. Here in Illinois the ISP accepts BP instructors to teach concealed carry and many instructors stop at this level. If your goal is ISP certification this is the only course needed. BUT if you want to do things the NRA way and become a Personal Defense Instructor, you are just getting started. I know of quite a few BP rated instructors that are teaching advanced holster drills as part of their cc classes. There is a little Catch 22 irony here. The ISP certified them to be CC instructors due to their NRA credentials. The NRA will not allow BP instructors to teach holster drills. They are teaching using their ISP credentials. The ISP supplied NO training. You do the math.

To teach Concealed Carry the NRA way, the bar is much higher than the ISP requirements. Next you would want the Personal Protection in the Home course. This Instructor workshop introduces you to the legal and basic fundamentals of personal protection with a handgun. Next is the biggie that most instructors balk on, the Personal Protection Outside the Home course. This course is all from a holster with most drills from concealment. For instructors this is a 3 or 4 day workshop.

Find a TC in your area you like working with and spend the summer becoming a NRA Defensive Pistol Instructor. I haven`t seen anyone that went through the PPOTH course that didn`t have a big smile when done.
