The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives’ (ATF) 2018 figures show Illinois as the top source state for guns recovered in the state of Illinois.

The ATF numbers show 5,337 guns recovered in Illinois were traced and sourced as coming from Illinois.

Fourteen other states accounted for a total of 4,375 guns recovered in Illinois and traced to their source. Those states were Indiana, Missouri, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Texas, Ohio, Georgia, Iowa, Alabama, Florida, Arkansas, and Michigan.

A total of 792 other guns were recovered and sourced among a group of 34 other states.

Former president Barack Obama suggested the majority of guns recovered in Chicago were from other states, during a speech at the 122nd annual International Association of Chiefs of Police on June 27, 2015. The Indianapolis Star quoted him saying, “There are those who criticize any gun safety reforms by pointing to my hometown as an example. The problem with that argument, as the Chicago Police Department will tell you, is that 60 percent of guns recovered in crimes come from out of state. You’ve just got to hop across the border.”

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D) told CNN’s State of the Union, “Our gun problem is related to the fact that we have too many illegal guns on our streets, 60 percent of which come from states outside of Illinois.”

The ATF’s 2018 figures also show that guns recovered and traced to source are over nine times more likely to be pistols than rifles of any kind.

How many of the "illegal" guns are guns taken from lawful owners that could or would not pay the court costs to recover their property?

And by those numbers they aren’t far off
5167 outside vs 5337 inside
So about 170 more for a 50/50 split

Yes they were and are wrong, only 1300 more for their 64/40 split

Watch for some juggling soon near you

The problem with them quoting out of state numbers is that they assume guns can enter Illinois only through illegal sales.

In reality, many people have moved to Illinois from other states over the years.  Some have brought guns with them.

People visit Illinois for vacations, to visit family, etc.  Some bring guns with them

Many people from other states work in Illinois.  Some bring guns with them.

And some people just hop across the border to commit their crimes in a city they know is mostly unarmed, and then just hop back home.  Many bring guns with them.

Does anybody know if "Beetlejuice" has made any comment about this yet?

Guns stolen from trains...any idea if these are in state or out of state guns? It's my understanding that a lot of guns hit the street after being stolen from trains cars passing through.

Stolen from trains as in shipments in freight cars while sitting intransent at the freight yards for switching.  Good score for the thieves and one might wonder how they get their information on which freight cars to hit or whether it's luck of the draw.

Not reported extensively anywhere.

I read a recent university study that suggests that 100% of all guns used in crimes in Chicago are used by criminals.

I could be mistaken.

Great question.

The trace would go back to the last FFL to have the gun in its logs.  Unless from an IL manufacturer or distributor, these guns' trace would show out-of-state.  They were not received by an Illinois FFL.

Yes wondering minds are asking, how did they know? Where are they getting the information?
Remember the semi full of Nike shoes? How would they know where it would be parked and which trailer it was!
IIRC in the article they didn’t bust into any other trailers, took no other semis, just the Nike loaded one......

Simple. Inside job. Who ever loaded the truck or train or works the train yard gives the info to others.
