Purchase limit?

No limits although multiple handgun purchases within a time frame may trigger additional reporting to agencies.

^^^This. My buddy is an FFL. Anytime I want multiple guns, we space them out, otherwise he is required to report them. Then it is a de facto registration.

He does NOT send in the 4473. Those are all in his personal business files, so the ATF has no idea who bought what. I THINK that if he ever gives up his FFL, he is supposed to turn them over to the ATF. If that's the case, they will be burned up in an unfortunate fire sometime in the future,

When an FFL ceases being an FFL they still have to turn in their bound book which lists everything transferred to everyone. So it doesn't matter if he destroys the 4473's (required to keep 20 years) Despite FOPA preventing a registry the ATF is now digitizing out of business FFL's bound books. They're stored as image files, but they're one software upgrade and legislation change away from a large portion of guns being in a searchable database (IE a registry).

So it on multiple handguns? Any specifics? What about longguns?

I think it is 2 or more handguns within 5 days. Long guns are not reported in general except in a few certain states along the southern border iirc.

2 is the magic number for handguns, but it does not apply to rifles in Illinois and it does not apply to receivers anywhere.

However, the reporting requirement does not apply to receivers

Fast Facts

The Gun Control Act of 1968 requires federal firearms licensees to report multiple sales or other dispositions of handguns to the same purchaser.

The sale or disposition of two or more handguns must be reported if they occur at the same time or within five consecutive business days of each other.

ATF views the recovery of one or more firearms used in crimes that were part of a multiple purchase as an indicator of firearms trafficking.

The reporting requirements mandate that all federally licensed firearms dealers and pawnbrokers in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas, submit to ATF reports of multiple sales or other dispositions of certain rifles to unlicensed individuals when two or more particular kinds of rifles are transferred at the same time or within five consecutive business days of each other. The types of rifles that must be reported are those with the following characteristics: semiautomatic, a caliber greater than .22 (including .223 or 5.56 mm), and the ability to accept detachable magazines.

I work P/T at a gun shop and multiple handgun sales are reported on the same day. ATF might give you a call or they might not, it all depends on various factors.
