My Son and I would like to work towards joining 3-gun shoots.  We are in the west suburban area of Chicago and I thought it would be fun to go and spectate at an outdoor 3-gun competition.  For instance - when you members at ASC have a competition, do you have to be a member to attend?  Or can anyone show up and watch?  Anything you can tell me as far as what to watch for, what to bring with, is there usually food or refreshments available?  Anything else you might suggest?

Thanks

Spectators are welcome at ASC and you don’t need to be a member. Bring your common sense safety precautions and you’ll be fine. Eyes and ears are mandatory even for spectators. There really is no food or drink available. Bring a cooler and if it’s summertime, plenty of water. A lot of folks stop at The Pub West afterwards, you will pass it in Waterman if you come from the East.

Spectating is encouraged because you will get hooked. It’s a great advertisement for both the club and 3 gun. Another advantage is you will get to see the new east side ranges that are closed except for matches and training.

A gun is like a parachute. If you need one, and don't have one, you'll probably never need one again.

I've only shot at North Porter Conservation Club, and I'm not a member. I just walk up, pay my fee, and shoot. I've had a friend go who just took pictures before he started bringing guns to shoot himself. He still needed eye and ear protection. There was a hotdog vendor that would show up, and there is a Culvers just up the road. I also shot at one with some friends near Sparta. They had a bathroom and club house, but we had to bring our own food and water. None of us were members, we just showed up, paid, and shot. I thought ASC was the same way.

It would be helpful to find a club you want to go to and find their match schedule online. They usually list the contact information for the match director. Just email or call them and they can help out with any questions.

It's also a good idea to let the person leading your group know you're new. You can even ask to be put last on the lineup so you can watch everyone else. Also let people on your squad know and they will be more than happy to give you tips. They are there to have fun, too.

Are you looking at any other competitions or clubs besides 3-Gun at ASC? I'm sure people would be willing to meet up and shoot with you and your son. Mine's one, and I'm really looking forward to taking him someday.

I'll be the first to offer, but if you'd like, myself and a few friends will be shooting a 3 gun match at ASC on 4/21, starting at 7am and you're more than welcome to come out and hang around the squad I'm on.  I'd be more than happy to answer questions in between resetting the stage between shooters, and shooting the stage myself.

They've changed the format this year to morning and afternoon flights and we're on the morning one.  From what I recall, if you're shooting, you have to be there at 7am.  I believe the gates would more than likely be open most of the day, but to be safe getting there around 7am would probably be best to guarantee you get onto the property.

If you PM me, I can send you my cell number, and I'll keep an eye on it that day to check for texts and wave to you so you know where we are.

Thanks DD - Unfortunately we will be at a Defensive handgun class that day.  But maybe another time?

Sure, there will be a bunch there.

I believe the next one will be on June 9th at ASC.  As long as I can get registered in time, I'll be at that one as well.

Just to add; ASC requires everyone, even spectators to sign a waiver.

I’ve been trying to get my son into 3 gun shooting. We may head out to ASC to check it out (we are members).
