At least seven people are dead and 12 wounded in a shooting at Fort Hood in Texas, the base's public affairs office told NBC News on Thursday.

The official would not give his name nor additional details. It was unknown whether victims are soldiers or civilians. One gunman was reportedly in custody and another was on the loose, NBC News said. A third shooter may be involved, according to NBC News affiliate KCEN.

KCEN in Waco reported that the second suspect may be holed up in a building on the post.

The base was reportedly on lockdown. Two nearby school districts were also being locked down.

Fort Hood is adjacent to Killeen, and 60 miles northeast of Austin. The sprawling complex is home to at least 4,929 active duty officers and 45,414 enlisted. Civilian employees total nearly 9,000.

The base has seen other violence in recent years. In September 2008, a 21-year-old 1st Cavalry Division soldier shot his lieutenant to death and then killed himself. Spc. Jody Michael Wirawan of Eagle River, Alaska. shot himself to death after shooting 1st Lt. Robert Bartlett Fletcher, 24, of Jensen Beach, Fla. to death.

7 dead 20 wounded now. Three different areas where shot fired. I am thinking terrorist attack, prayers for their saftey and hope they get this down soon.

Lets hope not...that's a guarantee knee jerk "assault weapons" restrictions...

Whenever there's a shooting like this, I never know what to think. However, I've never seen one of these mass shootings happen with a licensed CCW permit holder being the shooter.

All shooters identified as military soldiers. Reports were the 12 killed and 31 wounded were from a single shooter. However there are additional (unconfirmed) reports that there was a second shooter.....and is perhaps one of the two that are now in custody.

FBI to check into the possibility of the shooters being a mole within the military.

Initial reports from the spokesmen (General Cone) was two hand guns were used.

One of the dead is a contractor for security.

With multiple shooters I can't help but think there is a terrorist element involvement.

I hope I'm wrong.

I'm thinking the same thing. I know soldiers sometimes "lose it", but what are the odds it happens to three of them at the same time in the same place? If they are found to be soldiers who coordinated this attack it will be really interesting to find out why they did it.

Excerpt:

Twelve people have been killed and 31 wounded in a shooting spree at a Texas military base by what officials believe was possibly carried out by an Army officer.

Gunman kills at least 7 and wounds 12 at Fort Hood.

The suspected gunman was identified by ABC News as Major Malik Nadal Hasan. The shooter was killed and two other suspects, who are also soldiers, have been apprehended, Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone said. The gunman used two handguns, Cone said. He wasn't sure if the shooter reloaded the weapons during the attack. The general called the attack "a terrible tragedy, stunning." He said the community was "absolutely devastated." The extent of the injuries of victims "varies significantly," according to Cone.

Crazy when the we know the name and he is a recent convert to islam, yet fox is not reporting it yet. I would definately say a mole and this is a terrorist attack. I wonder if our president and govement will admit that this is what it is.

A U.S. soldier opened fire Thursday at Fort Hood, Texas, killing at least 11 people and wounding 31 others, military officials said. The gunman was shot to death, and two others were in custody.

Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone, commanding general of the Army’s III Corps, who confirmed the shootings, said the gunman used two handguns. NBC News’ Pete Williams reported that a U.S. official identified the gunman as Maj. Malik Nadal Hasan, who was 39 or 40.

A senior Obama administration official told NBC News that the shootings could have been a criminal matter rather than a terrorism-related attack and that there was no intelligence to suggest a plot against Fort Hood.

First my condolences to the family of those who died and were wounded. Secondly if the terrorism allegations are true when is our govt. and the sheeple of this country going to realize that we as a nation cannot overlook or downplay the threat these terror factions pose to our nation. Third; when I was in the army soldiers did not walk around carrying weapons. So the shooter would be targeting defensless soldiers. We intrust these soldiers with the defense of our nation but render them helpless at the same time. God help us and this country.

Well a Dr that worked with the shooter said he had anti American statements. The shooter an Obama supporter that said we should pull out of and not be in Afganistan and Iraq. He had some apparently some strong issues against the American involvement. The Dr said that shooting at the Little Rock recruiting station was a good thing and muslims need to strap themselves with bombs and blow themselves up in times square. Apparently reported to superiors, sounds like this is going to go way deeper.

I just fear because the president can't make a decision, which has been going on now 2 1/2 months and that drives up the stress of the troops and their families. That's not a good thing as shown by the events today

oldman, I have to agree with you, it's sad troops can carry weapons in war but stateside weapons are locked up and security left to a few MP's and mainly "civilian police force".
