Some red dot advice needed

Recommended Posts

I've just purchased a set of tac rail hand guards for my yugo AK and am thinking about throwing a red dot on there, but not going for broke on it.

Currently my AR has an Eotech 512 and it works great, but I'm not really looking to spend a boatload on an AK red dot.

I'm looking to spend somewhere in the area of around $150 or less. Just something that will not break, and so that I can have something that's better than the iron sights on my AK because they're terrible. I'm good with the irons, but any time someone else shoots the rifle, with no experience with it, they're all over the place. It'll also give me another thing to play around with at the range.

I'm not opposed to perhaps using the Eotech on the AK, but then whatever I buy would need to be good for the AR. If that's the case, it would need to be something with a bit of magnification.

Any tips are much appreciated. I end up getting myself all confused over this and make a wrong buying decision, so I figured I'd take your advice instead.

Not sure....I have mine mounted on a Benelli M3 shotgun and thing its an absolutely great deal for the price. As a point of reference....I have three carbines with red dots deployed on them. The first is a SCAR 16 with an Aimpoint Comp 4S and a 3X Aimpoint magnifier which with the mounts is a roughly $1,500 set up. The second is a SCAR 17 with an Elcan Specter DR2 1.5-6X which is a very expensive optic. The third carbine is an AR-57 M4 with a Vortex Viper PST 1-4X which is an excellent deal a $400. Obviously, none of the three of these is in the same category as a simple reflex site.....IMO the clearly best of breed in the red dot reflex space is the Aimpoint Micro.

My own thought is that the AK has range capability out beyond 100 yards.....unless you are absolutely certain that you are only going to use it at very short distances.....the 1-4X option with a scope like the Viper is something I would certainly consider. I will admit that I don't have enough experience with the AK platform to comment on the mounting system.

Vortex strikefire is the best you can get at that price point IMO. http://www.vortexoptics.com/category/strikefire_red_dots unlimited lifetime warranty. You can run it over with a car after its changed hands 4 times and you get a new one no questions asked. Sent from S4 Echoe ROM

I was looking at that one also lol! I really like Vortex because I purchased the Viper PST 4-16 FFP for my 308 and it's a dang fine scope for the money.

In your opinion, would it still be viable being that far forward on the AK; all the way out on the hand guards? The only comparison I can make is to the Eotech since that's the only "red dot" I currently own and it's perfectly viable since I have it approximately at where a red dot would be placed on my AK.

The crossfire II is another really good choice. 1-4x. Would be perfect for an AK. and only $200 with free shipping on amazon.

Primary arms has a 1-4x for $120 that's decent. I'm waiting for the primary arms 1-6x to be back in stock. It's on $229 and is very highly rated.

I have a strikefire on my 300blk build, which is probably the same distance eye relief as it would being mounted on the AK, and it's perfect. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/10/26/e3ehanas.jpg Sent from S4 Echoe ROM

Yeah that almost looks to be the perfect distance. It would maybe need to be another 4" forward of that though, but I'm sure it would be fine.

I'm going to take some time looking at all of the options everyone recommends on this thread some time tomorrow and making a decision. I'm glad that I'm seeing some of the items that I was already looking at.

The Primary Arms ones have a pretty good reputation, they have a new model with very long battery life which is just a touch over your budget but not much...

That one really is nice. With the 2 moa dot and 50k hour battery life, looks good!

Plus the micro size ones like that would fit better on an AK I would think.

Disclaimer: I have no experience with these...but I've read of several people using red dots from Primary Arms and they seem to be satisfied https://www.primaryarms.com/Red_Dot_Sights_Primary_Arms_s/903.htm

ETA: I see these have already been menitioned. Should have refreshed the page before I replied.

Replaces the rear sight leaf and the receiver's bolt cover on the Kalashnikov assault rifle, 1947 model (AK-47) and its variants. AKARS upgrade allows effective neutralization for many of the AK weapon system's traditional limitations. Once installed the AKARS allows the user to mount weapon optics utilizing the 1913 Picatinny Rail design (MIL-STD-1913 rail or STANAG 2324 rail, NATO) as a primary targeting solution, retain the mounted optic s targeting zero after extensive firing and field stripping of the weapon and maintain the ability to use iron sights as a secondary targeting solution by way of the built-in rear sight aperture on the AKARS. Black.

That would be the route I would go if my current hand guards were fine. They get way too hot to hold after two mags currently which is why I'm changing them, otherwise that's the best mod you can do to an AK.
