I've finally decided to get my CCL, so I've been looking at where to take the classes.  There a quite a few places in McHenry County to choose from with a fairly wide range of prices.  I'm struggling to find reviews and recommendations, though.  What reviews I can find are more about the gun shops and not the classes themselves.  I couldn't find a pinned thread, or at least an active one, here on Illinoiscarry about experiences with instructors.

Maybe I'm thinking too hard about this, because the current instructors have been vetted out simply through the passage of time, but I'd like to know I'm getting a good value for my money.  I'm not necessarily looking for actual recommendations, just an idea of what to look for so I don't short myself in terms of knowledge and experience.

Thanks!

I always recommend Michelle Quesada at the COD Homeland Security Training Institute. Not the cheapest but IMO one of the best programs out there.

I used Graigcelia. He is a member here. Has a class in October (Morrison IL). Under his member name is a link to class info. Plus you can get Utah CCW in same class. I enjoyed his class and now have Illinois and Utah.

I use GAT guns in East Dundee...(Looks like about 16 mile trip for ya)

A one stop shop...

You can take your classes and qualify on the range that day..

And for an extra fee they will put the application thru for you...

Yes, thank you!

We are doing a class on the 12th and 13th of this month in Morris (If you are in McHenry, that will be a heck of a drive however).

1.  Your comfort with the teacher.

2.  Teacher's subject knowledge / experience.  Especially knowledge of FCCL laws.

I chose Top Shot Academy (E. Dundee) because they use Sirt pistols to practice drawing and shooting from the holster.

Lowest cost and comfy chairs sounds like a winner to me. All certified instructors are required to provide the same basic info. Pick the nearest gun shop with a range AND reasonable rate to avoid having to travel more than necessary.

I honestly DESPISE the fact that Illinois racks me over the $$ coals and makes me jump through so many hoops for a RIGHT, while my idiot brother in Indiana needed nothing more than a small check and a form to get his lifetime CCL.

I don't like the fact that 16 hours is required but if I'm going to put the time in, I want it to be as productive as possible and not just the minimum required. Preferably something over and above the usual going through the motions.

That's just me. I get that some people just want the card and that's fine too. I'm one of those crazy guys who pays for 20-30 hours of training a year that isn't required.

The DuPage HSTI class lets you access facilities and tools you wouldn't be allowed to use otherwise. It's not just the same old classroom stuff and then 30 rounds qualifying.

NOT crazy at all - CHOOSING to buy skills training, for any hobby pursuit, at a place and price of YOUR choosing, is a wonderful thing and a testament to American freedoms.

Being FORCED to attend mandatory classes NOT of your choosing, not universally required, with a duration NOT in your control, and then being required to pay a substantial fee to be infringed upon and then 'allowed' to exercise a Constitutional RIGHT? Well that right there is a whole 'nuther thing. I call it a fool's errand frankly.  It was also 8 hours of MY time wasted that I'll never be able to get back, followed 5 years later by 3 more wasted hours and more draconian fees.
