At this point I think Indiana and IL should put their heads together, make Cook County IL and Lake County Indiana the 51st state. Both states would otherwise be much better places freed of those counties, politically speaking.
Raw Power Posted February 8, 2019 at 08:17 PM Share Posted February 8, 2019 at 08:17 PM Well, it would certainly lower the GDP of IL dramatically, that's for sure. Maybe exports would go up?
Blade13 Posted February 8, 2019 at 11:52 PM Share Posted February 8, 2019 at 11:52 PM Chicago is definitely a cancer on the body of Illinois. All manner of cures have been tried, chemotherapy, radiation...It is clear the only solution left to save the body is to amputate the cancer. or sell it to Chicagoans like this: Those darn downstaters are always getting in the way of us passing more gun control and a socialist agenda. If we break away from them, we can just do whatever we want.

Bird76Mojo Posted February 9, 2019 at 07:22 AM Share Posted February 9, 2019 at 07:22 AM I remember reading an article or two, years ago, that stated downstate Illinois couldn't possibly survive without Chicago's revenue. It said we'd basically starve to death from a tax revenue standpoint. Me, I'm willing to take the risk and give it a shot..

We stand a whole lot better chance if they’d appropriately apportion off the debt load. Of course, Chicago would claim that all the debt belongs to the state and they have none.... Me, I'm willing to take the risk and give it a shot..It's also possible that even if the majority of the revenue comes from Chicago, the city may be benefitting from that revenue thus getting a lot of it back. So spinning the city off just might be close to a wash financially. Just sayin...
Scotty425 Posted February 9, 2019 at 03:03 PM Share Posted February 9, 2019 at 03:03 PM As much as I would love to see this happen, the political aspects of this would be devastating. If such a thing were to happen today, Chicago as the 51st state would get two Senators, both undoubtably D's, shrinking an already slim R majority. Chicago as the 51st state would only increase the D Majority in the House. And don't for the Electoral College votes, that would only make it much more difficult for an R to win the Presidency. Nod Posted February 9, 2019 at 03:48 PM Share Posted February 9, 2019 at 03:48 PM I'd much rather see it become another country than a State that would have a say in congress and be eligible for federal aid. The first thing they'd want is a bail out.

Not so sure.... yeah they’d put up 2 D Senators, almost assuredly offset by the 2 existing Illinois Senators turning R, so actually a slight D loss there (2 of 100 vs 2 of 102). As for the House they’d get D Reps, replacing the already D Reps they’d pull away from Illinois, so a wash there. As for electoral college you’d move from the entirety of Illinois going D to part going D part going R, so a slight R gain there. The total number of Reps and Electoral votes wouldn’t (shouldn’t) change - just get split/reapportioned. Historically most of Illinois goes R, they just cannot overcome the deadweight of D in Chicago— remove that deadweight and the State likely swings hard R. spec4 Posted February 9, 2019 at 05:16 PM Share Posted February 9, 2019 at 05:16 PM Great idea but IMO will never happen. Would that be a problem? The rest of Illinois gets 2 R's. It will be a wash. And the electoral college part for Illinois issue - Illinois would go R for their electoral votes, instead of solid D like it is now.
Nanook Posted February 9, 2019 at 07:27 PM Share Posted February 9, 2019 at 07:27 PM They could call the new state "Madiganistan" which would be accurate. JB could still be the governor. The rest of us could elect an actual American to the job. By that I mean someone who honors what the country stands for, or used to stand for anyway. It will never happen, but it's nice to dream. And don't for the Electoral College votes, that would only make it much more difficult for an R to win the Presidency.>>>>more difficult for an R to win the Presidency.Hardly. Let's do the math.Illinois has 18 Congressional Districts.Recently we had 19.Look forward to 17 the next time there's a reckoning. We have gerrymandering under conditions calculated to keep the dems in power."Chicago" reps have territory spreading out far beyond the city, everyone else is spread thin. Let's work with 18 seats for this example. If Chicago is a state, based on current allocation of seats/population,The StateofChicago would have 4 seats, and 6 Electoral votes, New Illinois would have 14 seats and 16 EV. The US Senate balance of power would shift slightly in favor of R. If Cook Co is a state, based on the same current allocation,The StateofCook would have 7 seats, and 9 EV.The StateofBliss would have 11 seats and 13 EV,The US senate would get the same nudge. Now take it to the next level of viewing: The POTUS electionsIllinois is a winner-take-all state, (most of them are,)Hillary got all 20 of IL Electoral votes in 2016. If Illinois was split Cook/Illinois, there would have been Cook for Hillary with 9,and Illinois for Trump with 13.If Chicago was a state, with just a little gerrymandering it would have been Chicago 6 for Hillary, andand new Illinois for Trump with 16..The dem strategists surely know this scenario, and fear moves like tearing the urban areas off of states for new statehood. One more benefit to the rest of Illinois:Crazy crazy gerrymandering could stop. Congressional borders would stop at cook or Chicago lines, that's all they would get to play with. The new Illinois state might not care too much about gerrymandering either. The congressional seats in new Illinois could swing more conservative, while state of Cook or Chicago could have everything they ever wanted in terms of corruption, free candy, holding all the cards, etc.

Ranger Posted February 11, 2019 at 11:11 PM Share Posted February 11, 2019 at 11:11 PM Well... If you believe the study, downstate does benefit with the collar counties basically shouldering most of the burden for the rest of the state. https://news.siu.edu/2018/08/081018-research-shows-state-funding-disparities-benefit-downstate.php I don't know what all was included in the study though and that can make all the difference.
