Euler Posted October 16, 2018 at 10:59 PM Share Posted October 16, 2018 at 10:59 PM I received the following text message about 30 min ago. Hello <real life name>. I'm Scott, a volunteer with Kwame Raoul for Illinois Attorney General. We can trust Kwame, a former prosecutor, to focus on our safety as AG. Will you be a voter for Kwame on Nov 6? From: +13124710639 I never, ever give my cell number out to anyone, except close friends and family, whom I swear to secrecy upon pain of death. My cell is for me to call others, not for others to call me.How did Kwame get my number? How did Kwame get my IRL name associated with the number?I thought cell numbers were unlisted by default. Voila! Some third party paid the application developer for the contact lists it has obtained by the users who allowed access to the contact list. To be honest I fail how to see that it is legal for the following to occur at a profit. Example - Johnny gets Janes phone number, email, etc. Johnny allows ACME application to access his contact list on his smart phone. ACME sells janes contact information to a DuMass Marketing company.... Did Jane somehow authorize her information to be sold from ACME to DueMass? It's actually much simpler, they just bought copies of your voter registration information from your County, it's available to political organizations under IL law, so they can simply request copies and pay a small processing fee. And even though the phone field on the voter registration form is optional, I'm betting most fill it out. (BTW, Google recently admitted they sell numbers of people who use their cells for 2FA.) Virtually no one gets my number from me. Well, I wasn't going to vote for him, anyway, but if he (or his campaign) violates privacy so casually, I want to cast negative votes for him. 2A4Cook Posted October 17, 2018 at 09:38 AM Share Posted October 17, 2018 at 09:38 AM Hey, his commercials say he's gonna fight Trump for health care! He's for the people! I dunno WTH the Illinois AG has to do with national healthcare policy, but hey, it sells to his fellow Kwamies-Kommies.
Glock23 Posted October 17, 2018 at 11:51 AM Share Posted October 17, 2018 at 11:51 AM I'm 99% certain at least some of them are buying (or stealing) info from utility companies. Many of our bills are in my wife's name, as she's the one who had them turned on when we bought our house, but I set up the online access with my information for paying bills, receiving statements, notifications, etc. I've gotten several political texts addressed to my wife, not to me. Chief Illiniwek Posted October 17, 2018 at 12:43 PM Share Posted October 17, 2018 at 12:43 PM My daughter and I both got similar texts from JB's minions. They had my real name wrong and I pointed that out. I asked how they got my number and who is <name in text>. In response to the "can JB count on your support", I answered "Not only NO, but HE!! NO!" I got a response of "thanks".

Robo's have voice recognition and it's getting better - then there is the reaction TO the words recognized as dictated by the scripts. That real person that the call is routed to is a real mentally hazardous spot to be in. The thing is, now what ELSE was done with that (YOUR!!) information that your response provided them with. A simple hangup without invective or vitriol tells them FAR less.

It was actually a text message, not a call (but I guess that's even easier to route). Normally, I'd have done nothing, but I figured it was a robot and the response would go nowhere. I was a bit surprised to actually get an answer. Ultimately, the person on the other end proved to be rather polite (particularly in light of my initial response), and basically thanked me for caring enough to have an opinion. JTHunter Posted October 18, 2018 at 02:07 AM Share Posted October 18, 2018 at 02:07 AM Nothing has come through on my cell as of yet, but it is usually turned off unless I'm going to use it. HOWEVER, my landline gets a "survey call" almost every night, and this is despite the fact that I'm on the "Do Not Call" list AND in downstate Illinois !!
