Long Range Rifle Classes?

I've got a few long guns in .308...a Savage bolt gun and an AR-10 and most ranges don't have anything longer than 100 or 200 yards. I can shoot 100 yards and fake my way through 200 but I'd really like to learn how to actually shoot long range rifle.

Does anyone know of a long range class in IL? Looking for something where the instructors will actually teach ballistics, scopes, and how to hit something hundreds of yards away.

Thanks

I believe SAFER USA has some at ASC in Waterman.. They have a 600 ya range there.

The catalog shows a 6 hour LR class. http://www.saferusa.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/2018-Course-Catalog-171217.pdf

I've seen that one before but haven't seen it on their schedule since last year. I was interested in taking it but didn't have the gear at the time.

I HIGHLY recommend it.

The class is small, and over half of it is spent on the range. The instructor is excellent and the practical knowledge you get from it is invaluable.

Would you care to share details about your experience?

How long ago did you take it?

What equipment did you bring?

What stuff did you cover?

Anything else?

Great Precision Rifle training. One of the best instructors in the country and a fantastic facility.

The Site is on my list...I've gotten some great suggestions here and I think that I've come up with a progress plan that looks something like this...

  1. Shoot more Appleseed events until I shoot rifleman with my 10/22
  2. Take a known distance Appleseed to shoot out to 400 yards
  3. Take the SaferUSA long range course
  4. Take the precision rifle course at The Site.

I may throw some other course in along the way or take the SaferUSA course additional times.

I took the SAFER USA class last month. Class size was limited to 6 people. I used my Tikka T3x CTR in .308 with a Vortex Viper HST 6-24x50

The class covered fundamentals, loads, and ballistics. We spent about 3 hours in the class room, the balance on the 600 yard range at ASC.

I'm a member of ASC and used the class to qualify on the 600.

Had you been successful at shooting at great distances before or were you a novice at the time of the class? Since you qualified, I'd presume you were successfully hitting your target on the 600 by the end of the class.

I'd only shot at a maximum of 200 yards prior to this, so i was definitely a novice at long range. In the class I was able to hit an 18" gong 3 out of 5 times.

I recommend the book Long Range Shooting Handbook by Ryan Cleckner for an objective approach, especially equipment-wise, to long range shooting. He also has a podcast and has done a number of videos for the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF)

Sorry, missed your reply.

I was semi-capable of shooting out to about 300 yards before this, and had shot to 400 once or twice. I had never gotten any formal instruction on scope dope or calculating mils or MOA before this class, and that was extremely helpful.

By the end of class, i was able to hit clays at 600 yards (after a couple of tries each) and was hitting 9/10 at man-sized steel targets. I fired 83 rounds total. The instructor helped a lot with form and was a wealth of knowledge, and was able to hit out to 600 yards with iron sights (using heavy grain 5.56), which he did a few times.

It's well worth the trip, time, and money.

Are these courses something that a disabled person could do? With maybe some mobility devices, self provided?

I'm guessing no one wants to tell me I'm outa luck. I guess I'll have to call the instructors and inquire.

Probably. I know a lot of the long range courses have students shooting prone. While it's not long range, when I took the Appleseed course last year they said they make every effort to accommodate students with any type of disability and that none of the positions are a hard requirement if you can't do them and you still get all the benefits of the course.
