Odd FOID Situation – Odd & Confusing

Recommended Posts

I have an odd situation. Last year my wife and myself had to get our CCL’s renewed. We went to the refresher class together. I got my renewal in right away but she had to wait a month because we got our CCLs a couple months apart.

I got my new card right at 90 days (I have finger prints on file). She got hers about 6 weeks later. She also got a new FOID card with hers; I did not get a new FOID card. Odd, but I didn’t think much of it.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago. I won a gun in a raffle and went to pick it up. They ran my FOID and it came back as something like “pending issue of new FOID card”, I can’t remember the exact message. Then they ran my CCL and it went through. When comparing my FOID and CCL numbers, they are the same except for the first two digits. My new CCL has two digits in front that my FOID does not have. Otherwise the numbers are the same.

When I log onto the State Police site and check my CCL & FOID they both state they are “Active” and the numbers match with the new number that has the extra two digits in the beginning that came with my new CCL. The “issue” and “expire” dates match my original FOID.

So, what it comes down to is it APPEARS IL decided to issue me a new FOID card with my CCL but never sent it to me. Of course, when I call the IL phone number, it is NEVER answered!!! I’m afraid if I try to say it was Lost or Stolen, IL will screw things up even worse. My other concern is, if I try to go buy a firearm, I may get denied because my Active FOID does not match my actual FOID according to the IL State Police website.

In this case, I actually believe it was just some sort of mistake, but Lord knows I can’t get any help from this state. So, has anyone else been through this? Any suggestions either way?

Thanks in advance!!

I had the exact same thing happen to me. For some reason, the ISP never printed and sent my new FOID when I renewed my CCL. I did not find out until I went to buy a gun as well. You have to call the ISP to get it sorted out. It took me a few weeks to get through to them. Once I finally got through and got into the hold queue, it took me almost 2 hours on hold. Once I talked to someone, I was told that they did in fact issue me a new foid, but for some reason it never got printed and sent. You must be diligent and keep calling. Eventually you will get through. But in the mean time, you should be able to use your CCL (since it is the same number as you foid). Good luck.

@lg they don't always do that, but do for some of us who were the first to get our cards. The deal is they want the CCL # the same as your FOID card. The, "first two'" digits on the CCL that are different form the FOID are the year in which you first received your CCL card. In other words; if my FOID is 123456789 and I got my initial CCL in 2020 then my new CCL would be 20123456789.

So why issue a new FOID? Because when they first issued them the numbers were random and not related to our FOID card numbers. To correct this they reissue cards that are like except for the first two digits... Also, they updated the look and security of the FOID card... the old ones were pathetic and cracked very easy, the new ones aren't greatly improved. Ironically, the really old card the lamented at the ISP lasted forever and never cracked lol.

Those are the reasons for the reissue.
